hair dresser question

a friend of mine sent this to a group of us asking our opinion today. what do you guys think?

I found my old hairdresser. He's now working out of his house until he opens his salon. He says he has a full salon in his house and he's charging MORE then I was already paying at the salon he DID work at. My question is, do I tip him if I go to his house? Or do I ask am I supposed to tip you? I don't know what to do.

I thought you don't tip the owner of a business?

I'm a hair stylist that owns my own business and I get people that do tip and people that don't. I charge what I want to make. If people tip, then it's just a 'bonus' to me.

I think the rule of thumb is that you don't tip the owner, but I feel like everyone has a different opinion on that.

my friend does something similar but her prices went down since working from home (and she only cuts hair for friends/long time clients prob. for legal reasons or something). I always tip her because I like her - sometimes it is even in the form of bringing her a coffee

I always heard this before too but tip for good service.

I think lots of people must not go by this because I was always in the minority about not tipping for wedding vendors (for the ones that owned their own business that I also had to pay to come to me AND an "early morning" fee since my wedding was in the a.m.)

My old hairdresser had the same thing and I'd go to her house to get my hair cut. I always tipped but I don't know whether I was supposed to or not--I just thought it was a nice thing to do since she always did a good job.

well i always thought that if the stylist worked in a salon that the salon owner got a cut of what you pay for your services so you tip to help make up for that ...if this guy is working out of his home and getting 100% of what he charges then i would tip if i loved the cut he gave me. if i ended up with a hair cut that i was only "meh" about, then i wouldn't tip him since he's the owner. i don't know what's right in this situation but that's what i would do

I LOVE when my clients do this! I'd rather have a latte over the tip! I've also had clients donate to my Avon Walk in lieu of a tip, which was fine by me. Last week one of them even folded my towels for me. Big Smile

i think rule of thumb is if the person own the business then no tips-so in case of my facialist-she has her own business/salon-i do not tip her but at christmas i always give her a very generous gift in the $300-$400 area

I'm a nail tech that works in a salon on the weekends and I also have clients come to my home during the week. My clients that come to my home are friends or friends of friends so I don't know if it really applies. But my "Home" prices are much cheaper than the salon prices that I work at and if I go to your home then it's an extra $10 added on to the service fee for gas and lugging my stuff around. But for the most part some people tip and some don't, but like the previous post said the service fee that I charge is what I expect you to pay and the tip is a bonus if recieved. I do have clients that give me gifts instead of a tip or even paying for that matter. I have one lady who bought me a roaster for thanksgiving because I didn't have an oven. This same lady will also give me homemade pickled mango in exchange for a doing her nails. It works out for everyone
