Question for those not originally from NYC
What made you move here? Do you have family here at all? I've always been curious what makes a person pick up and move across the country. Was it a touch decision to do so?
Re: Question for those not originally from NYC
Well, I'm from here but my hubby is from Cali so i can answer for him...he moved here for me :-)
ETA: and yes, it was very hard for him and he still hounds me constantly to move back to California for good.
Reason to move here: I followed a boy.
I do, however, have roots here. My mom grew up in Queens/LI, my dad was born and raised in Brooklyn. For a bit, I did live in my grandmother's old house in Queens Village. The only reason that we moved away is that my mom got a job working at a university in upstate NY. I have some family that lives here. H also has a cousin that lives about a mile away from us.

I am originally from CO. I came because I'd just had a huge and horrid breakup with my college boyfriend. I knew some girls who were moving here from Boston, so I just picked up and left. It was not particularly difficult for me, I went to college in California, I'd studied in Italy for a year, so I was pretty used to not being right near my parents. Also, I had an aunt here when I moved originally. I ended up meeting J here, so it all worked out for the best! He came from Texas, mostly because he wasn't doing anything interesting there and his sister suggested he try NYC and see where it led.
That said, we plan on moving back to CO next summer because we've been here for 10 years and are ready for a new change.

I don't know anyone or have any roots here.
My H and I have lived all over the place - I haven't lived in my home state since I was 18!
Of all of the places I've lived, NYC is actually one of the most welcoming and easy to adapt to. I think because there are so many people who aren't from here.

We moved here after college - for my photo career. And I dragged DH with me. although he really loves it here now. We don't have any family local, but my SIL is moving in a week to go to law school - yay!
I guess I'm more like the last ones. I grew up in a small town and didn't really like it and knew when I graduated I wanted to see what else was out there. In college, I never really traveled or was able to study abroad, because I supported myself. I came on vacation to NYC and stayed in a hotel near LGA in Woodside, Queens. I figured out how to get around and thought I could handle moving here and teaching in a diverse, urban school. I came back for a job fair and was hired to teach in two Queens regions, then ended up working at a school for the last 6 years that is in Woodside!
I met my husband well I was in grad school, who also moved here by himself from DR. He has friends here and moved after his company was bought out. So now we're both still here. I think if we moved to WI, we would miss NY. But now that we're thinking of children, it's hard not to have our families closer.
What a good question Nova!! And some interesting answers.
I pretty much moved here all on my own from New Mexico, but i kind of had ties here. My grandparents were born and raised and married in Brooklyn. Then they moved to New City, NY (about an hour north of NYC) and had my mom (and uncle and aunt).
When i moved here 7yrs ago i only had 2 friends in the city, and it just worked out that one of my friends needed a new roommate! And things kept working out from there! But i moved here for theatre, since that's what my BA is in. There's not a lot of paying theatre opportunities in Las Cruces, NM.

Thanks for the answers girls. I love reading people's stories.
I'm so late on this, but thought I would still answer! I didn't pick up and move across the country, just from about 3 hours north of the city. I have family on Long Island and my grandparents were all born in nyc, but I didn't have any nyc experience until I was in college (I guess it's in my blood though!). I took an internship the summer before my senior year here in nyc. At first I was absolutely terrified to come - like sobbing on the phone to my boyfriend terrified - but once I was here and really experienced it I was completely hooked. I ended up taking my job offer with my internship company just so I could come back to the city!
I've been here 9 years now (my nyc-anniversary is next week) and I can't really imagine myself living anywhere else. We'll see where life takes us, but for now DH and I are here and plan to keep baby here for the near future.
