I don't have an ob/gyn. I get my yearly exam, but I just go to my "regular" doctor. I'm wondering if I should be going to an actual ob/gyn, though.
When I was 18 I went to see an ob/gyn and when I was in the office she asked me if I was pregnant. When I said no, she looked at me really surprised, and asked me why I was there to see her then & kinda... rushed through my (first ever) gynecological exam and acted really put out.
So, I was a little gun-shy about seeing another gynecologist. After that we moved and my old doctor was too far away so I went to a new GP who always did my yearly well woman exam.
Anyways... now I'm wondering if I should just be going to a gynecologist. My GP hasn't said anything, but I feel like there are things I could talk about with an ob/gyn that I don't feel like my GP has interest in helping me with.
What do you think? Oh, plus Ted & I have no baby making plans in the near future, that's part of why I'm hesitant to go to an ob/gyn again. That one from when I was 18 just really scarred me, lol.
Re: seeing an OB/GYN
I guess I'm the opposite... I didn't even know that GP's did the pap exam. I mean, it makes sense that they do it, I just never thought about it. The last time I saw a GP was my last visit to the pediatrician when I was 18! After that I went to the campus nurse practitioner for exams/BC pills in college, then chose an OB/GYN right after college.
I like my OB/GYN a lot since she's easy to talk to, even when I'm kind of embarrassed. As long as you have that kind of rapport with your GP, I'd say stick with her/him until it's baby-making time.
I've always gone to GP's, with the exception of a three year period where I was going to an ob/gyn because I was having consistently abnormal paps and I didn't feel comfortable with my GP's care during that time. I loved my ob/gyn but I've stopped going to him because he's in Anchorage (3 hour plane ride away) and my paps have cleared (there's only one ob/gyn here in town and she's a freaking quack). So now I'm seeing a nurse practitioner who specializes in women's health. I've always felt way more comfortable with nurse practitioners than docs and feel like I get more holistic care from them.
Point is, if you're comfortable with the person you're seeing then there's really no need to change. If you have questions that you would feel more comfortable discussing with an ob/gyn then go ahead and try them. You can always switch back if you don't have a good experience.

It's not that I'm not comfortable with my GP - I am. It's actually a practice with 2 doctors who are in "Family Medicine" so they see everyone. The last few years I feel like their practice has become WAY more geared towards babies & young children.

Interesting...I always went to a straight GYN until 2-3 years ago, I started going to an OB/GYN (yes there are just straight GYN's). I figured this would be THE doctor.. she was affiliated with the good hospital so when the time came for kids...
Then we moved... now I have no doctors, let a lone an ob/gyn. I figure if I can find an ob/gyn now, then when i'm working on or am preggo, it will make life a little easier. One less thing type of thing.
If you arn't planning to have kids period... no reason to see an OB ever.
If you are thinking of kids, i would say find a GYN that is also an OB.
Once you hit a certain age, you should see a GYN... atleast that's how I feel.
That's what I was thinking also! Well, I'll just see what happens. I have my yearly the end of this month, so if I'm still feeling like I should find a gynecologist then I'll start searching around.
Krissie - that all sounds good - except for the you still working part - wtf! If you need to vent just shoot me a call or text.
Add me to this list! I would have never thought of asking my GP for a yearly exam. To me, that should be done by a GYN. I've been seeing mine since my first exam at 17 and love her. It was also nice when I had some problems due to pre-cancerous cells and was able to get my biopsies and such done right there. I don't know. I would only see a GP for things like colds/flu shots. Not saying they aren't qualified, I just feel better going to someone who is more concentrated in the area they are spreading and scraping
I was unaware GP's did this. I wouldn't want to get an exam from my GP, although I haven't seen him in over 3 years so I don't know if you would even consider him my GP. I sought out an OB/GYN who's specialty is in fertility because I was having problems and was worried that in the future I may have fertility issues. I changed insurance so had to change docs, but I still see an OB/GYN because I don't want to go through the hassle of finding a new doctor when/if I become pregnant.
I'm not sure where I heard this, probably read it somewhere on the internet, so it could be false, but I've heard that OB/GYN's only make money off the OB part of it so that could be why the rude dr in your past asked you such a question. Maybe look for someone who is just a GYN if you aren't thinking about babies anytime soon.
