FOOD!

I made a lovely dinner tonight for my H and brother, and it got me thinking back to the nastiest meal I made. It was some pasta with a really badly made pepper-jack cheese sauce with red onion in it. It was gross, my H said so too.

So, what is the worst meal you have ever made, and how did he react?Pizza

Re: FOOD!

  • I think my biggest fail for H and I was a creamed enchilda recipe I got from a friend. I remembered it being good when she made it but for some reason the second time around not so much.  Poor ate about half his plate and than said he was full.  A few months later when I offered to make it again he fessed up that he thought it was gross.
  • Mmm... no comment. I'm a very uneasy cook and that's for a reason LOL.?

(I've never made anything really GROSS, but I've definitely screwed up- over or under-cooking things, burning the hell out of it, etc. H's policy is to grin and bear it bless him) ;) ?

ETA- I've never made anything super gross because I've never made anything very adventurous, I should add. ?

  • What comes to my mind is a recent time when I tried to make spaghetti with meat sauce.  I think the can of tomato sauce that I "spruced up" was bad.  I noticed it was a strange color when I poured it into a pot to simmer and when we started to eat it, it was definitely off.

I also tried making a quiche in college.  The recipe called for either Miracle Whip or Mayo (I don't remember which) and I used the other one because it's what I had.  Then, I learned that there is a big difference between the two.  I haven't attempted a quiche since.

  • I can't think of anything super gross. But anytime I start thinking too much about foods that are undercooked, or overcooked. I PERSONALLY get really grossed out.

I made this awesome coconut milk/curry chicken recipe once, but I fecked up the chicken and overcooked it, and although H ate it, I just couldn't bring myself to go near it, even with new chicken. I don't know if I will be able to eat it for a long time, because I already grossed myself out.

I am weird about food like that.

  • This isn't exactly anything I did to make it taste awful it was a product that I used.  I tried making a Hungry Girl recipe which called for Soy Crumbles... which is supposed to taste like ground beef.  NOT QUITE!  I couldn't bring myself to eat it...but being the good guy he is the Hubby finished his plate.
  • I tried to make a custard or something like that to go on top of stuffed french toast that I was making... I burned it beyond recognition.

  • I got all of my epic failures out of the way before H and I met.  I'd been around the kitchen a few times ;)

However, before we met... well- let's just say I am good at putting out a kitchen fire.  Once I was searing some stew meat at 4am, then hit my head so hard on the counter overhang I had to sit for a min (dizzy).  While I was sitting, the oil in the stew pot caught on fire.  I threw flour on it, and it started smoking like CRAZY!  I lived in an apartment... I just KNEW that I was going to set the fire alarm off and wake the whole building.  Then the fireman of my dreams was going to burst through the door and find me with bed head and unbrushed teeth fanning the smoke alarm with a couch pillow.

That's not the only time I set fire to the kitchen, either.  :)

  • Most recently one night H and I were making burritos and he accidentally set the tortillas down on the stove burner which was on. He proceeded to make the burritos with the tortillas that looked ok. It all tasted like burnt plastic. It was so gross. We ordered in pizza. lol I do tend to run accross reciepes that I don't care for but not usually anything too gross.

  • Unfortunately my two worst meals came from my favorite magazine, Real Simple.

These were fortunately meals that Andy never had to taste.  One was linguine with chickpeas, parmesan, and zucchini.  The other was spaghetti, ricotta, thyme (i think...), and sweet potatoes.  Both were horribly disgusting.  As in I threw them out and I never throw out food.  My biggest thing with recipes is I need some kind of sauce.  Real Simple's recipes are pretty much all extremely dry.  I love sauce so much that Andy bought me a cook book named Get Saucy!

  • My ex MIL made this fantstic home made baked potato soup, I asked her for the recipe and my first attempt at making it was TERRIBLE! Youstart out with flour and butter and heat that, but mine got all clumpy and burnt and I didn't realize I had done it wrong for awhile later so I kept making the soup, it tasted terrible! Since then I have gotten a new soup pot and have made it rather nicely!

  • Thankfully I haven't made any terrible dishes. H has no hair on his tongue and will tell me if something is nasty. I do remember a couple of months ago putting in a little to much water in my rice and the rice came out really lumpy but thats about it.
