We only have units in 2 of the bedrooms.  Our family room, kitchen room and living room are sooo HOT!  We are getting central air installed though and they start tomorrow.. wooo hoo!

  • Our old home was one level so we had bought a big window unit that cooled the whole house down. We now live in a 2 level home and it has central air, but the central air is currently not working. They came out to look for a leak and ended up finding one(we knew they would because they had just filled the freeon-sp- in it last month) so they had to fill it with nitrogen and then come back out and see if it leaked anymore. Hopefully it doesn't. We broke down and put our window ac in yesterday(it was 92 in the house when I got home with the baby) so at least it is cool downstairs. Thats where we will be sleeping until the central air gets fixed.

  • We didn't have A/C until we moved to Ohio. It's not very common in North Jersey, everyone had the window units. I have really fond memories of those summers though, because it was always such a big deal when my dad would put them in. We only had 3, so one for downstairs, one for my parents' room, and one for my room that I shared with my sister. My brother always camped out on our floor in the summer. We always had to have the doors shut to keep the cool air in.

Same here! Even when I lived w/my aunt, she never turned it on even on the hottest days. That's when I slept in the basement!

  • We have central air!!  I honestly don't feel like we need to run it as often as DH feels we do.

  • We have 2 window units, a large one downstairs that cools the 1st floor and a small one in our bedroom, our bedroom is nice and cool, it makes the rest of the upstairs tolerable with a few fans. We would like to have more window units but our whole upstairs is on one breaker - so we can only have one. We don't have any duct work upstairs so having central A/C installed is not an option at this point.

Don't you hate that? Growing up we only had one tiny vent upstairs and it was in our bathroom. We did have more than one breaker so we had 2 window units up there, but it sucked in the winter. I slept down in the living room a lot in the winter because it got so cold in my bedroom at night.

we have one vent in the upstairs hall that is also open to the bathroom, we have to close it off on the bathroom side or the bathroom is like a sauna. The bedrooms get down to about 60 at night when it's really cold out, so it's not awful.

60 isn't too bad. On the really cold days I could see my breath in my bedroom sometimes. My sisters room wasn't as bad because she had a gravity vent (just a hole that went through to the downstairs, no actual heat) but my room got COLD. When my mom replaced the furnace a few years back they did run duct work upstairs so it's heated now, but that was after I moved out.
