Credit or Debit

When you are paying with your check card and they ask Credit or Debit, which do you choose? Is there any reason for your choice?

Re: Credit or Debit

  • i choose 'credit' but when i think about it more its a lie. I choose 'credit' 90% of the time. When you use your check card as Credit (mine is a Visa Check Card), it comes with additional security just like when you use a normal credit card -- you're protected by fraudulent activity, etc. I feel safer using this option with all the identity theft issues than having to enter my PIN number.

But credit is costly to the store, so when i shop at a small local shop for instance, i choose debit Smile

  • I never use a debit card--that card is only used as an ATM card for me.  I'm paranoid!

  • i chose "switches because".  I use debit if there's a pin pad easily accessible to me (like in the grocery store, target, etc) and I need cash back.  If I don't see a pin pad already out, then I always choose credit... although really, I use my credit card almost exclusively.  i would only use my debit card if i was needing cash back anyway.  =)

  • I use credit as much as possible because it gives me point. I don't get points when I use my card as debit.
  • i don't like giving stores my PIN. i always choose credit.
  • I'm voting credit too.  I only use my debit card at the ATM machine to get cash out.  We use our credit card for anything we can 1) for the points, and 2) for the added security.  I've had to file 2 fraudulent claims on my card before, and I would have lost a lot of money had it been on my ATM card.

I will add that we pay our bill monthly and monitor the CC level - so I can see where our CC strategy could go awry for some.

  • I only use my debit to get out cash, and I use cash for almost everything except the grocery store and gas. I had someone steal my debit card info, and they made a fake ATM card and took $2,000 out of my savings account...with the original card still being in my purse.
  • I always do Credit because I get points that way Smile It just kills me that I have to do debit at Costco and loose out on all those points! LOL
  • I choose debit because my CU gives cash back on debit transactions, but not on credit transactions.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • if it's a big store, i usually choose debit because my credit union gives interest on my account if i make 10 debit transactions a month.

  • hmmmm. I always do debit if they ask.

I don't get rewards for my debit card (it's tied to my bank).  However, no particular reason... hmmmm...

it's tied to my bank account so should i be saying credit???

clearly, i haven't thought this through.

  • I always use it as credit.  always always.  I get points, but also people can still get your debit pin number and other info if you use it as a debit.  It happens all the time.  Most recently it happened at a Sears and HEB in the Houston area.  When you enter your PIN the number is actually stored into the PIN computer system for anywhere from 24 hours to 6 months.  someone then hacks into that computer system and gets all the CC numbers with their attached PIN number.  From that they can get much more information about you.  Scary.

  • I answered "switches because..."

If it is a large/expensive item, I use credit because I want the protection the credit card provides.  If it is a mom and pop type place, I use debit because I know how much my sister and BIL pay each time someone uses a credit card at their store and I want to save those people the money.  I also use debit at places like HEB and gas stations because otherwise it takes days of the actual amount to show up as "cleared" in our account, and DH has a tendancy to spend the money if he sees it in there before asking me.  Debit clears that day.

  • Credit, I can never remember my pin...not even sure I ever set one up.  That and I think we get rewards on that card...
