moving plants

I know the  rule of thumb is spring or fall to move plants but I can't wait.  In May I planted a lot of things but I am not happy with a couple of them.  First thing I want to move is my 2 rose bushes.  They have not grown more than an inch and only 1 has put out 3 blooms.  I don't think they're getting enough sun. Second is a poker plant.  It is being blocked by another plant so I want to relocate it.  Do you think they will survive the move since they were just planted a couple months ago?  TIA

Re: moving plants

  • Personally, I wouldn't do it because of the stress from the heat. I don't grow roses, so I can't tell you what impact a summer move would have on your plants.

  • As long as it is not too hot and you water well till the plants are established in their new location you should be OK.  Try to do this early in the morning, not mid day.
  • Just make sure to dig a lot of earth out with the roots to avoid damaging them, and water the plants you move copiously in the days following the transplanting.  They should be fine.  I did a lot of transplanting about a week ago (delphiniums, irises, echinacea, lupins) and everything has survived so far, and we're in the middle of a heat wave now!  It's been 36 celsius here for the last 4-5 days.
