My Nephew Has Mono

He is 10 yrs old and he is on 30 days bedrest to start.  Mono is no joke, he has zero energy, his blood sugar is really high and his liver enzymes are out of control.  My sister says that he can't walk from the living room to the bathroom by himself.  Oh, and his lymph node on one side of his neck is the size of a softball.  He has to get his blood redrawn in 5 days to check the sugar/liver.  I feel so sad for him :(  Her two daughters were tested today, I hope they don't get sick!  What a way to spend his summer vacation.

  • That sucks!  I had it when I was 14 but don't really remember much, aside from being incredibly exhausted.  Poor kid!
  • My thoughts exactly, what a way to spend your summer vacation :(  I hope he recovers and feels more like himself really soon.

  • Poor guy!  I had mono during summer vacay when I was young, but it was a really mild case (I could still function, I was just tired all the time).  Later on my college roommate got it and basically skipped a month of classes because she could barely get out of bed.  I guess its severity is all over the board.

I hope your nephew feels better soon and gets to enjoy at least the tail-end of his vacation!

  • yikes, poor guy.  hope he springs back soon.
  • Aw, that sucks. I had it for 4 months at the end of my 2nd year of university. My neck lymph nodes swelled up and popped out too - I looked like Frankenstein's monster! I was feverish and unmovable for 2 weeks and then exhausted for another 4 months after that. I couldn't work or do anything! It was a total waste of a summer... I did watch a lot of the World Cup and the Tour de France though.
  • Thanks for the well wishes ladies.  I had a neighbor when I was in HS who had it and he missed like 6 mos of his senior year.  The school district sent a tutor to him everyday.  It can be a bad bad thing.
