Okay so nobs' post to "next project" got me wondering...
Flame me if you want, but my mother never used coupons, and so I never learned the art of couponing (if thats even what you can call it lol)... but I really want to start doing that.
So if you are big on finding/using coupons... how do you do it? Is it pretty much from the ones you get in the mail? Do you do it online? Newspapers?
I have no idea where to start, because whenever I find coupons I want to use, I forget about them. And a lot of coupons aren't for stuff we like.
We are big on grocery shopping at Whole Foods/Trader Joes, etc. so that makes it even harder. We also shop at Target.
TIA!!

Re: Couponing
I find a lot of my grocery shopping coupons in the Sunday newspaper. Since we don't have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's here in Greensboro, I don't know if they put coupons in the paper or not. You could probably go to their websites and sign up to receive special offers via e-mail (some places will offer special discounts for any online members).
This reminds me that I need to print my coupon off for my CFL lights.
HTH!
Do a search for printable coupons. You can find some that way. I like couponcabin.com

This is a great website for explaining how to multiply your savings (like using a coupon along with store deals)
Planning Bio - Woefully out of date
Like lca, I use the grocery coupons in the newspaper as well. I also get particular ads/newsletters from the stores I like, like Costco sends their own coupons to me.
Also, with whole foods/trader joe's types of foods, a lot of time the particular manufacturers often have coupons too (like kashi does their own coupons, etc), so looking online is definitely a good idea too! Good luck!! :-D
My mom never used coupons either until a couple years ago when the Real Estate market crashed and my parents had to learn how to live in a whole new lifestyle (dad is a Realtor & main money maker of the household). Now she swears by them and carries a little file folder with her everywhere with coupons for all sorts of things. She gets them newspapers, mailers, Walgreens has a rewards program where you get money back for things (or something like that), she also is on a website called the crazy coupon lady. I'm not exactly sure what it is, if it's just advice where to get coupons or if there's actual coupons on the site.

get the sunday coupons from the larger papers (this sounds terrible, but get the sunday papers for larger and oft lower income demographics- there tend to be more coupons in them. for example: Detroit Free press has WAY more and better coupons than the Ann Arbor paper. i dont know why they're the same company's coupons, just printed differently).
shop mostly only items on sale
stack coupons. (definition: using a store couppn with a manufacturers coupon). Shop places that give you free stuff- or money back ala CVS.
Target does coupons, but make sure you are prepared for them to tell you that you cant use certain coupons, or basically any myriad of protestation that it's against their policy (most of the claims are untrue. the corporate has a policy online, and it's not very restrictive. you can stack coupons at target).
Personally, you cant get me to walk into a Whole Foods to make a purchase. It doesn't support a financially sustainable lifestyle. If i want organics i go to the co-op or farmers markets.
i'll shop begrudgingly @ TJs (they have horrible food-allergy policies) but it's by far the cheapest for certain specialty cheeses and coffee. and seeings as I'm an utter Wine-o, i cant afford not to shop at TJs.
Sticking to the larger chain grocers for staples will get you the best prices. Plus, you can coupon there.

I've gotten some coupon from Target in the mail. I'd sign up at their website for a free account and they may mail you some. It's pretty infrequent, however.
My parents are really into buying food stuff on sale. They watch the major grocery store fliers to see what's going on sale when, and buy it there. And usually buy a lot, if they can (they always have like six gallons of ice cream because they buy a bunch when it's on sale. Bad for the diet though!).
coupons2.smartsource.com is another one
I love using coupons, however, have gotten away from it recently bc it is kinda time consuming to be clipping all of the time. My parents used them all of the time when I was a kid, my Dad was sometimes worse than my Mom...lol. The thing that I have found as well is that some of the stores won't take the ones you print off of the internet bc they get so many fraudulent ones. I know Wal-Mart is like this. But I am not sure about other stores. It doesn't make sense bc the coupons you print online have the little security thingy that they can verify they are real.
missy is right, it can be kind of time consuming. but i just take an hour or two on sundays after work - FI goes through and takes out the circulars and clips the coupons for things we'd use, and goes through the little folder with all of the coupons to take out the expired ones and pull out the ones that are about to expire so if we need one of those things we can go ahead and get it while we have the coupon. when i come home and match things up, and make a meal plan.
basically you have to stock up on things when you don't need them. and you'll buy ridiculous amounts of things at once just because they're on sale. but you'll never have to go to the store to pick up a can of tomatoes, or beans ever again.

I don't know if you have Kroger stores near where you live, but if you do, they double coupons. So, a $0.50 off coupon is now $1.00 off. Sometimes they even triple.
If you don't have one near you, check to see if any of the other major grocery stores near you do coupon doubling/tripling. That's where you can get some big savings!
