Dog eating grass

So my dog has decided he wants to eat grass.  I've heard they eat it when their stomach is upset etc., but that doesn't seem to be the issue here.  His diet has not changed, they haven't had any treats, we haven't given him any table food, nothing.  He just goes outside and plays and then eats the grass.  The only thing I can figure is he has never had a back yard before.  He always lived in an apartment so maybe he is just trying to figure it out what it is?  So my questions..

1. Why is he doing this?

2. How do I make him stop?

If I have to clean up green grass dog vomit on my carpet one more time, I may strangle him. TIA!

Re: Dog eating grass

  • try feeding him carrots. i know that makes them stop eating their poo - not sure about grass.
  • I feel for you. Ours does the same. I googled it and consensus is some dogs just like to eat grass, they even go so far as to seek out specific kinds they like.  That's the deal with ours. And apparently DH had to clean up after him yesterday.  We're just keeping a better eye on him outside. After he potties or is done playing, he comes back inside.  I stand there and do a lot of "eh ehs" and "leave its" while we're outside.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

Ditto.  My dog just eats it for no apparent reason. Especially when it's long.  Keeping it cut shorter helps.  I'm always outside when he's outside, mostly because he eats his poo (I've tried everything for this!) but he also barks and I don't want to be "that neighbor."

On the carrots thing...  My dog loves carrots, but they tend to give him the runs, so be careful if you try that.

  • i gave my dog a carrot and he gobbeled it down.

then prompty turned around and puked it alllll up. (along with his last meal).

not fun to pick up carrot puke... you've been warned! Stick out tongue

  • When I worked for my vet we always had dogs that ate grass.  He basically said the reason dogs eat grass is because they can, they are bored or because it tastes good to them.  They can get an upset stomach eating too much grass and end up throwing it up for sure.  I've never heard of carrots helping a dog not eat grass or poo... I know that giving them crushed pineapple in their food will keep them from eating poo 100%.
