80's Party Ideas

Next month I'm throwing an 80's themed bday party for DH.  I have a few ideas such as making an 80's music compilation, getting some of DH's old toys for decoration and ordering some old movie/music posters for decoration.    I've never been to a party like this but I think it could be so much fun.

Can you guys help me come up with some more ideas?  Thanks!

Re: 80's Party Ideas

  • We had an 80's movie bday party for me.  We have a friend with a giant inflatable screen and DVD projector that we set up in the backyard.  You can also rent those.  DH found a lot of old music videos that we played before the movies.  He even got some old trailers.  I had set up a poll for our guests to vote on their favorite 80s movies ahead of time and we watched a few movies.  We also had wine coolers.  It wasn't a totally 80's movie, but fun nonetheless.

  • We had one a couple years ago. I got 80s music videos off of Netflix and played those in the background. I bought some cheap slinkies and pogo balls (although they weren't as sturdy as the ones we had back then so we couldn't actually use them).  I went to goodwill and bought some 80s records to use the covers as decorations. I made an 80s pictionary game. I think that's about it.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • A friend of mine had an 80's costume party for her birthday a couple of years ago, and her sister rented 80's video game machines (like, the kind you see in an arcade)--Ms. PacMan, Frogger, and one more.  If that's really expensive, I think I've seen 80s games in a handheld format at Target.
  • I would encourage costumes for sure.

And definitely have everyone come in costume - its so much fun.

The last one I went to had a "prom picture" wall - with a splatter painted white sheet hanging up as a backdrop, and everyone had to take a fun picture when they came in.  They also put more splatter painted sheets on the couches to decorate.

  • At my sister's 80's grad party they played an 80s Music Trivia game. They compiled an itunes list of all 80s music and split the group into guys vs. girls. They would play a song and then stop the music and you would have to complete the next part of the song's lyrics. It was HILARIOUS. People really got into it as the game went on and everyone had a good time. The winning team got a bunch of random 80s things like mini rubiks cubes, slap bracelets, neon sunglasses, etc.
  • These are great, thanks!
