advice on visiting Lancaster county?

My DH and I want to spend a weekend in Lancaster County.  We just want to drive around in the country, stop at farmer's markets, and explore.

Which town would you suggest that we stay in?  We would prefer a formal hotel, over a B&B.

Are there any specific places we should consider stopping?  We need a very low key weekend so we can unwind.  All of our recent vacations have been fast paced.

Is there anything specific that we should make sure we see/do while we're in the area?  Thanks!

Re: advice on visiting Lancaster county?

  • If you are looking for country and farm markets and the llike routes 340, 896, and parts of 30 are good bets.

Hotel wise, it depends on the price you are looking for. Are you looking for a run of the mill chain hotel or a boutique or a pampering experience?

  • There are some great bed and breakfasts in the area too. And if you can, and want to stay at some place a little different but still relaxed, but are able to bring your own bedding, they have awesome cabins at Mill Bridge Village.

That is JUST outside of the touristy area of Lancaster County, and there is TONS of Amish surrounding it with their farms. Some even work for the campground and often come to sell homemade goods at the campground. It is near the outlets, so if you want to shop you can, and near some farms to tour. But it is also very serene and beautiful at the campground. You would need to bring sheets. I believe they have quilts on the bed, so you wouldn't need a quilt.

ETA- This is in Paradise in Lancaster County. There is tons of good food around and lots to do, but it is also very easy to relax!

  • If you're looking for a nice place to stay, The Arts Hotel (on Harrisburg Pike downtown Lancaster) is beautiful and you could walk to central market from there. You would have to drive out of town for the Amish experience if that's what you're going for. I think there is a certain novelty to staying in Intercourse but have never stayed there myself. I always take visitors through though so they can say they were there :o)

  • The Lancaster Arts Hotel is indeed lovely. Just make sure you request a room in the old section which is the part that was a warehouse. The new section, the rooms are tiny, low ceilings and cookie cutter. The "old" part had fabulous one of a kind designer rooms. Their on site restaurant, John J. Jefferies, is also great.

Personally I don't know that I'd walk to central market, but you could walk to a Barnstormers baseball game. The one entrance is across the street.

  • We got married in Leola, which is just outside of Lancaster.  The Inn at Leola Village is a very relaxing place.  They have a spa and restaurant on site, as well as a nice pool.  www.theinnatleolavillage.com
  • Here's a good site that lists the farmers markets in Lancaster County.  Be careful, they're only open certain days of the week.
