Man, I suck. I'm so sorry, I ended up busier this week than I expected.
Cowboy Ciao http://www.cowboyciao.com/menu.php -- Not cheap, but sooooooo freaking good. You MUST get the "Cuppa Hot Chocolate" dessert. It's seriously one of the best things I've ever eaten. Their wine list is literally a 3-ring binder, it's HUGE. Plus it's in Old Town Scottsdale, which is touristy and cute. There's also a famous ice cream shop right on Scottsdale Rd. in Old Town that's supposedly pretty good. It's a pink building, can't miss it. I would definitely stay away from this part of town at night, though. It turns into douchebag club central.
If you venture into Tempe, Mill Ave. is pretty fun. Tempe Town Lake park is right there, there's a bunch of shops near ASU. But again, also turns into douchebag central at night, although the students are gone and it might not be too bad.
This is totally not near you, but it was our favorite Thai place http://www.yuphasthaikitchen.com/ And we adored this place http://www.autumncourt.com/menu.html
You're near Taliesin West, which I always wanted to check out but never did. The Capitol Museum downtown is free, Mesa has a nice art museum...
Are you going to the Canyon? Or Flagstaff? I freaking LOVE Flagstaff. And it's not hot! I could take or leave Sedona, it's super touristy and cheesy, but if you decide to go, make sure you go through Oak Creek Canyon on your way home. It's the prettiest place I've ever been, hands down. Incredible views.
And ditto Noisy on the Monastery, that place rules! You cook your own food on these giant charcoal pits. It's pretty fun.
Hope that helps! Have fun and have a Double Double for me. I'm so jealous of your In-n-Out excursion.

Re: Irish
No worries. When we got in last night, we stopped at Target for some groceries, grabbed a bite at BJ's Brewhouse, and passed out. Although I am glad I didn't have to resort to posting in the weekend plans thread, "wandering around aimlessly because Bethie forgot about me."
We're going to do Flagstaff and Sedona. We were looking at Oak Creek Canyon so that's good to know.
I'm glad you warned us about the douchebag central places. Otherwise I would have wanted to throw bricks at them and I didn't pack my brick launcher because it works overtime during Jersey summers.
ETA: Thanks!
If you guys like beer, we really enjoyed this place when we went to Flagstaff. www.mogbrew.com The beer at this place was decent, but not as great as Mogollon, but they did have excellent poutine (made by a real Canadian chef) www.flagbrew.com Of course, that was 3 years ago, so maybe the Canadian chef left and took his poutine with him.
We loved Flagstaff.
Ugh, I wish we did more Flagstaff trips. We honestly would've moved there had there been any jobs. Library jobs are few and far between.
Irish--Are the Diamondbacks in town? There are always cheap tickets available, and they keep the roof closed and the A/C on during the summer. And you can go to Alice Cooperstown down the street!
I bet her FUPA's name is Shane, like the gunslinger/drifter of literature.--HappyTummy
