Brazilian blowout - was someone asking?

I think someone here was thinking about getting a Brazilian blowout. Time had an article about cosmetics and the horrible things in them. Apparently the secret ingredient in the blowout is formaldehyde. Personally, I wouldn't want that in my hair. Just an FYI!

Re: Brazilian blowout - was someone asking?

  • I did some googling - I guess some of the original formulas contained it but most don't now. Still, soaking your head in chemicals...ew.
  • how did this topic come about? I wouldn't want to put my hair in any kind of chemical either....I've boycotted dying my hair and Ive let it grow out to its natural color because I read the ingredients in hair dye. Yuck.

  • Someone posted a while ago with questions about it...

I used to dye my hair ALL the time, but have stopped doing so because of all the chemicals. My hair is much healthier now, anyway!

  • I've dyed my hair since I was 16. I've been told demi dyes are much less harsh on your hair. The colour doesn't last as long, but your hair doesn't dry out either.

I'm going to try and steal the page from FIL's magazine, there was other chemicals to watch out for in your makeup, shampoo, etc (hormones/cancer causing agents). Not a huge list, but interesting and kinda scary.

  • Parabins are found in cosmetics and they are very bad for your skin. They are a Petroleum by product. I started buying natural makeup and parabin (sp?) free makeup and my skin has really improved. They also have natural hair dyes at places like Akins food store and Whole Foods but I have SO much hair and its down to my waist that its easier to just leave it how it is. I"m a brunette almost black color when its natural and I like it so why mess with it. I used to put highlights in my hair or try to lighten it but I'd always get the orange color instead of golden and when I'd get it professionally done they do the nasty stripes in my hair so it didn't look natural at all.

  • That was me that was asking.  There are other hair straightening procedures that use chemicals, but Brazilian Blowout is formaldehyde free (it used to have it, but doesn't anymore).  According to my stylist it's a protein treatment not a chemical treatment.  But I'm thinking I will wait a while to decide if I want to try it because I can't afford it right now and it's still fairly new so I want to do more research to make sure it's safe.

  • Haven't researched much, but saw a groupon for a salon in chicago and it was something like $175 (this is the sale price). Just a tad expensive!
  • Yikes!  The place I get my hair done charges $175 regular price.
