Oh Mom....

My mom is a SUCKER for email forwards.  You know, the ones that tell you you are going to get cancer if you do this, or get murdered if you do that, or not to eat this because you will get a flesh-eating bacteria, or not to use this because you'll injest cockaroach eggs and have a colonly of roaches in your stomach, etc....

Every time she gets one of those, she takes it as the gospel truth and forwards it to everyone she knows with a "very important - please read it!!!!' message.

And EVERY TIME, I go onto snopes and see immediately that it's either a blatant lie or a gross exaggeration.

I always send the snopes link back to her and tell her to check there before she sends out emails to everyone she knows.  But since she can't access snopes at work, she ignores that step and continues to send out these emails in a panicked frenzy.

I just got one about benzene in your car giving you cancer in the summer....she sent it TWICE, both times with urgent messages, to everyone in her address book....and it's not true.  Of course it's not.

The woman eats like crap and doesn't exercise but would rather freak out over random emails that aren't even true instead of focusing on fixing things that we KNOW are no good for you!  Sometimes she is very frustrating :-)

Re: Oh Mom....

  • LOL! Wow, i'm so sorry. Sad At least she means well...?

My dad is a sucker for email forwards too, but the kind that are lame jokes or videos. I made the mistake of watching one such video *at work* and it was a foreign commercial that featured a man and woman COMPLETELY NAKED!! Thank god no one sat behind me but i was furious with him! I had to chastise him over email and i think he felt really bad. So now i don't even read/look at those emails, i just automatically delete them. And it's taking every ounce of energy that i have to not rip him a new one when he sends disparaging joke emails about Pres. Obama... Angry And he's in the Army, doesn't he know about respecting authority figures?!

  • OMG, DH's 89 year old grandpa is a die hard republican and LOVES to send disparaging emails about Obama, Hilary, Pelosi - basically any democrat and anyone who doesn't abide by the "drill baby drill" motto.  His emails can all be debunked on snopes too (you know, like Obama is a terrorist or Hilary hates America....) but I'm not sending a link to snopes to grandpa - let DH do that!

  • Danielle, that is so annoying! My dad constantly bombards us with emails with bizarre jokes all the time, my DH has gotten fed up with that and basically put my dad in his spam folder (now my dad emails me if he wants DH to look at something serious, lol). DH's aunt sends out the "health alert" emails with OMG, don't do that or don't do this. I just ignore them for the most part. My mom, on the other hand, believes every word of those emails and then proceeds to call me and tell me all about them. So yeah, I feel your pain.
  • My FIL forwards thing to DH all of the time, thinking it's the truth. Then DH asks me if I heard about whatever "news" was in the email. I often get a good laugh out of it.
