House hunting

HH and I have been busy!! We started looking at houses a few weeks ago, MIL is our realtor (so that's been helpful and stressful). We've seen a few that we like, but yesterday we saw one for the second time and we went over with my dad who is an inspector. He has some concerns about the foundation and the work they had done to the house in 2005. We are so torn because we really like the house and the neighborhood is great but foundation is a big problem!! So in the next couple of days we have to decide if we want to write up an offer and then hire a Structural Engineer to come in and inspect the property to see what he thinks about it all. Please keep your fingers crossed for us!!

On a good note, my thank you's are officially finished and all in the mail!! Also, I've been working on scrapbooks for the wedding and honeymoon and they are nearly done!

Re: House hunting

  • Good luck with the house and congrats on the thank yous! I haven't worked on our wedding scrapbook in a few weeks, I need more supplies...

  • Good luck on the house!!!  It's such a pain in the butt when you find a house that you absolutely love, only to find something wrong with it.  It's like my dad told me when Adam and I were house hunting "don't fall in love with a house until the keys are in your hand"... I know that's easier said than done, but it helps to try to keep your emotions at bay so you don't get disappointed.  Even if it doesn't work out with THIS house, there will be another one out there for you!!  I hope it all works out!!!

    THIS.

It is a big big big pain. We are FINALLY supposed to close in 16-ish days. We've been searching since March. Don't get frustrated and don't lose hope. Just keep sight of the end goal!

  • It is SO hard not to fall in love with a house until it's officially yours, but this is really really good advice.  Being a homeowner is wonderful, but finding the perfect house is such an enormous nightmare.  We were lucky to find our house, it is older (46 years old now) but was really really well maintained with lots of upgrades and we ended up not needing to do any work at all on it...but MAN we saw some crazy houses.  I'm not looking forward to having to go through that again at some point.

  • Good Luck with the deceion making and congrats on the thank you notes!!!

  • Good luck!  Househunting, while not necessarily fun, does make for some good stories.

I have a few favorite 'disaster houses' from when we were looking.  One of them was the house that was completely covered in mold.  Upstairs you saw a bit of it on the cupboard doors, bedroom doors, random things like that.  As soon as we hit the 3rd step on our way downstairs you were overcome by the smell of the mold and when I hit the last stair was when I saw it completely covering EVERYTHING!  The closet doors, the handrail, the closet shelves, the floor.  It was absolutely disgusting.

And to think I was originally disturbed by the fact the sliding door closed itself because it wasn't square....
