non-clickly poll! acts of frugalness
wow where is everyone? were there no posts yesterday? and only one so far today? let's get things rolling.
what is something you've done (or considered doing) that is a bit extreme, being frugal?
i'll start. i saved and washed my starbucks disposable cup. i realized that i don't like my homemade iced chais as much as the ones from starbucks, and for no good reason. i think it's a mental thing. something about drinking it through that green straw... so now i'm tricking myself into thinking i'm drinking a $4 drink but it was only cents.
i wonder how many times i can run this thing through the dishwasher...
Re: non-clickly poll! acts of frugalness
My mom used to do this! She would also wash and use the plastic butter tubs - or anything else that would seal - too.
jezca - have you seen the plastic cold reusable cups they sell at starbucks? I know you'd have to pay for it, but at least you can reuse that one over and over.
I can't think of anything I'm super frugal about at the moment.
Hahahaha! Oh I got one ... kinda.
Yesterday my car was at the dealership, so I had a loaner car. I intentionally ran all my errands yesterday while I was using the dealerships gas in the dealership's car that got 19 mpg, vs. my SUV's 14!
So there!
But really, I am frugal. Cheap even. I just haven't done anything especially frugal lately .
Ikea charges for bags.
Well, when I need to be really frugal but still have plans to go out, I do things like eat at home first and then just have drinks. Drinks are expensive enough that I don't feel like I'm doing a disservice to the waitstaff and I still get to do what the purpose of the night was (grabbing a drink).

it's crazy how expensive soft drinks are at restaurants! the profit margin must be through the roof. especially for tea.
ok this one borders on stealing, but i'm going to confess it. last week ken wanted me to pick up some of those tuna kits for his lunches - you know the ones that come with a little can of tuna, crackers, mayo and relish? well they're like $3 each. whereas a larger can of tuna (just the tuna) is lie $0.60. sooooo.... knowing that we had a variety of crackers at home, i bought several cans of tuna. went to the mayo and relish areas, but no dice - they don't sell the small packets, just the jars. which wouldn't work because my husband is in his truck all day, no frig. so then i took aubrey over to the cafe part of heb and bought her a corndog (she was hungry and it was lunch time). grabbed a huge handful of mayo packets and stuffed them into my pocket. i mean, hey - maybe my daughter REALLY likes mayo on her corndog, right? riiiiight? right.
i may delete this later...
i saw those last summer and actually wanted to buy one, but every time i tried they were out. do they have them again this summer? i might do that when my disposable gives up.
but i don't think i'll like the straw. maybe i'll pocket some straw, a la mayo. lol!
I'm pretty sure there are worse things than taking free mayo packets from the food court. Especially since you bought a corndog. But if you're worried about turning to a life of crime, you may be able to buy the individual packets at costco
I wash and reuse some baggies, and foodsaver bags if there's still room to seal them. And sealable plastic containers, they're basically free tupperware, lol! My mom does it, I never thought anything of it until I met my H. He throws EVERYTHING away.
So no one in my house likes to eat sandwiches from the bread loaf heels and I hate to throw them away. I saved all the heels over the course of a few weeks (about 8 of them) in the freezer.
Then last Sunday, I made French toast with them. They were delicious! Slightly old bread works best for really yummy French toast.
Great idea! I didn't know that, but will definitely give it a shot - we have the same problem in our house.
Seriously. Chuy's charged me $2.39 for a freaking Diet Coke! I remember when they were under $1. That is just ridiculous. My mother told me a glass of iced tea is over $2 at almost any restaurant now. THAT is stealing. Taking free mayo packets ... not so much

i had a little spree at the new anthropologie at the domain today...
nothing frugal going on at my house today...
"The House We Built."
A journey of building the dream.
I have one, they're awesome! I actually use it more around my house for water than I do for Starbucks. It works great for around the house. They also give you a small discount when you use your won mug or cup.
I do this with perfume! I wear it so infrequently and my tastes change so much that I can't bring myself to buy a $50 bottle of something I might not like in a week. So I have about a billion of those little glass vials.
Oh goodness...where do I begin? DH thinks I'm ridiculous but really, it's not just about being frugal, I just don't like to waste things either.
If we are wanting to have dinner out I will see if there's anywhere on Restaurants.com that we can go. For example this morning we went to brunch at Hecho en Mexico which was really good. For 3 of us it cost us $0.80 for the Restaurants.com $10 gift certificate. Then the total bill after 2 bloody marys cost us only $17 after tip.
I keep and wash and reuse butter tubs, etc. But that's also because DH never remembers to bring back his tupperware so his lunch gets sent in that. If he actually does, I keep reusing them until they finally end up left at his work and in the trash.
I make sure we drive the car that gets the better gas mileage no matter where we go.
Our electric cat box I line the receptacle box with an HEB plastic bag so I don't ever have to re-buy the boxes they sell. (I got this idea from a nestie)
The bags that bread comes in, etc? DSS and DH get their lunches sent in them when they forget their lunchboxes. (I would never send DSS with this to school and embarrass him, just to the sitter, a fellow nestie). Also, it's a waste not thing.
