Work vents

So, I know I started the other random "add your ___ experience here" thread, but, I figured we could use another one.  Mine is boring.  Feel free to skip ahead to add your own.

Back in December, we got a huge construction case in.  Our firm was brought in after discovery had commenced, so there were thousands of documents.  Local counsel didn't handle the case very well so it was a big old mess.

I had a couple of cases that were super crazy at that time, so my boss lady hired another paralegal specifically to work on this case.  I had the case for a couple of weeks, but I was very vocal in letting the attorneys know that I was not able to spend any time on it.

So, fast forward to today, the paralegal still only has this one case.  I get at least a couple of emails or phone calls from her per week asking random "have you seen this document" type questions.  My answer is always no, because I didn't ever really work on the case.

Now, since my cases are slow, I have been asked to help her out with various projects.  She keeps giving me all of these things and explaining them to me as if I know what is going on.

Dude, you have three attorneys working on this case.  You have status meetings every single week.  Have I ever attended one of those meetings?  No.  Why do you think I know one effing thing about this case?

  • Haha, I was thinking of posting a work vent post, too.

Can your direct her to the other attorneys when she asks those questions? Or does she just not get the hint?

I am clearing out the drawers of garnishment paperwork, weeding out people who are no longer employed with us. I have found SO many folders where the person doing the filing must have just glanced at the document and made a folder for the first name they saw. Like, there will be a court order for child support and instead of filing it under the name of the employee, a new folder is made with the child's name. Or the custodial parent's name. Or the sherriff's name. So some people have documents spread across four different folders. Do people not give more than a .5 second glance at this stuff? Pain in the ass to fix.

Usually, she is calling me on speaker phone with one of the attorneys in her office.  I suspect that she just doesn't want to tell them that she doesn't know.

Your filing issue would drive me up the wall.  That is insane.  How is anybody supposed to be able to find anything?

  • Ah, so it's more of an "Let's shift the focus to Vinny!" thing? Lame.

God forbid there's ever any need to pull these files out. We'd be sunk.

  • I'm going to start a rumor that microwaved fish leads to cancer. Because it may as well.

  • One of my big work projects has had me going to some public housing apartments and I've met some innnnteresting people.  In general it is a bit icky and I'm not a fan.  Though going there makes me so thankful for what I have in life...

  • We had swordfish for dinner last night and I considered taking the leftovers for lunch today, until I decided that would be a terrible idea.

  • I just found a folder with the name of the NY state marshal responsible for collecting the debts of about 15 different people, with all of their attendant paperwork shoved inside. WTF.
