Anyone live in Muscle Shoals?

Hi!

It has been forever since I've posted on the Nest but I figured this would be a good place to ask this.

I currently live in Macon, GA. DH and I both grew up in big cities (Atlanta, DC) and we miss the city terribly. DH's job is here though so we have stuck it out for 7 years. I have a small pet sitting business (as well as work in insurance full time). I've made wonderful new friends here, and while Macon is small we still enjoy close shopping, restaurants, and other conveniences of a larger town.

DH was recently offered a position in Muscle Shoals. It would be a huge pay raise for DH and he has a goal to retire early. But the thought of leaving all my friends and starting all over again in an even smaller town than Macon terrifies me. It will be difficult for me to get another job and pet sitting may not be needed in such a small, close-knit town. It makes me tear up to think we're moving further into the country when we've had a goal to move back to a city for so long. I don't want to be a stay at home housewife with nothing to do!!!! I'm trying not to be selfish about it and I'm trying to find some great points to living in Alabama. Anyone familliar with this city?

I'm sorry this is so long!!! Thanks for reading :)

Re: Anyone live in Muscle Shoals?

  • I had a sorority sister that is from there and always had great things to say about it.  Unfortunately I've not been there myself.  I would check out their info on the web, maybe go visit there if you can?

Sounds like there are pros and cons - although you may not have connections to AL, change can sometimes be good!!!  As in any big decision, I'd make a pros and cons list together w/your DH and weigh everything out.  That might help as well.

Hope some of the above can help as well.

  • Hi! I work in muscle shoals. I work in the insurance field as well. I'm going to be honest...it is small!! Its close to Huntsville which has a lot more to offer as far as shopping, dining, and entertainment.

I've lived in this area all of my life so its all I really know. Its just like anywhere else...it has pros and cons. But I love the idea of having a nestie in my neck of the woods! Wink

  • Totally forgot you work there Rachel!!!  I just always think of you in H'ville!!! (guess b/c it's so close to there too)
  • That's where DH and I are from!!!! I promise it's not as small as it seems. It is a wonderful city to raise kids. We hope to move back there some day! Email me if you want somemore info! I tell you anything and everything you could want to know! bamagirlerin01@aol.com

  • I went to college at UNA which is in Florence (right next to Muscle Shoals) and my husband is from that area.  We live about an hour from there now. Yes it is small...but I wouldn't describe it as country.  The Shoals area is actually pretty quaint with quite a few historical aspects to it.  It definitely has a Southern feel to it.  And Huntsville is just a little over an hour from it and it has plenty to do.  Katie above gave you some good websites to look at.  Also if you can I'd recommend taking a trip to the area.  It really is a nice place.
