Medical assistance for unemployed?

Seeing my dad this weekend was ridiculous. Apparently he fell off a ladder a few weeks ago, prob has some broken ribs and his back hurts even more than it did before, and can't sleep. Did he get checked out? Of course not, b/c he has no medical insurance since being unemployed since Jan 09. He kept saying, I don't want to see a doctor, they'll just tell me how stupid I am...

I'm at my wit's end w/him-he needs medical attention not just for the ribs, but everything else wrong w/him. His wife gets under my skin too; she works seasonally then takes unemployment the rest of the year (which is major BS to me). She doesn't schedule him a doc appt either. I'm ready to do it myself!

I haven't looked yet, but thought someone might know of information or program that helps unemployed w/medical issues (financial assistance, extended payments, anything) before I just start online searching and who knows what I'll find. Thanks for any help or direction.

Re: Medical assistance for unemployed?

  • I think the only thing really out there is Medicaid/Medicare. If they live in lucas county, you can go to the job and family services website and it will have the application there. It will also list everything that you need when you drop off the application. It can be a pain, but it can really help when you are unemployed. I think the max income for the month is 1200 or so. It will show you that when you get on the website too.

  • medicaid is the only thing I can think of - if he is not collecting unemployment or if he is getting unemployment but is still below poverty level he should be able to qualify.
  • I know if they went to the ER, they can't refuse service to someone that needs it.

    The Little Clinic

Some Kroger's have a clinic inside with a nurse practicioner.  I know appt fees were $40 when I checked into them previously.  They can do everything with the exception of rx for narcotic's.

Most Dr's offices offer "cash" price options where it's a discounted rate if you pay with cash. (or don't go thru insurance)  I know in DH's office for speech it's cheaper to pay cash then it is to copay on ins.

If they had to take X-rays you can call around and find the cheapest place.  I know it kinda sucks but if you shop around you can find a cheaper rate somewhere then where they tell you to.

Just remember for each test they run you get billed if you're paying cash price so I would shop everything.  It's a liitle time consuming but it can be a lot cheaper in the long run.

  • Right about the ER, I'm afraid it might be $$$$$

Re: the Little Clinic - He has a doctor, so it's prob best to go back to him since he has the history of my dad's issues.

But shopping around for X-rays is a good idea. He might just have to suck it up and apply for Medicaid. I know nothing about the program, so I'll have to check out the website. One positive thing has been him smoking less; reason 1 they're expensive and reason 2 he's read the quit smoking book I got him several times.

  • Crimson,

If he goes to the ER (St. V's, especially) and he fits a certain financial "guideline", his bill will be waived or reduced. When I had my kidney stones, I ended up paying nothing because we fit in the family of 4 guidelines (and thank God, cause we don't have insurance and the price of that testing and crap was ridiculous!).

  • I see, thanks! I'm going to see if I can find more info after work and see if that will give him the push to see what's wrong. I know he's scared to find out everything that could be wrong. It makes me mad and sad that he doesn't take care of himself.

  • I was reading about a new clinic in the city paper today too. (the rant issue)

(same style as a little clinic, but I can't remember name of it.)

DH said that he should go to an ER.  Try Urgent Care at Toledo Clinic (on secor) or I know at Toledo's ER they also have Express Care.

It's "typically" cheaper then ER prices. Ask specifically for the urgent/express care at the ER.

Even tho it might be $$$ they can't refuse you and you can pay in installments, setup payment plan or have them keep billing you until you pay it off.

  • Thanks for the info. Now if I can convince him to go if another issue. Short of knocking him out and putting him in my car it's going to be tough!
