did any of you...

get off the pill before you were both ready to TTC??

I had a fed up with bcp post last week, and I'm considering just quitting it. I'm kind of curious to get my body back to it's natural state after 7.5 years of hormones. And I don't want to switch to something else - I just want to be done with it for awhile and just rely on the pull out method until DH is completely on board with TTC - I have decided that I am ready whenever. And yes, this is part of the reason I am sick of the pill - why deal with the side effects when I don't want a 99% chance of NOT getting pregnant?

DH knows I feel this way, and I will be talking to him this week further as I decide whether to refill my prescription Sunday.

Re: did any of you...

  • I'm still on the pill, but will probably go May or so of 2011.  As we will probably start TTC in June/July.

Most of my friends went off the pill for a solid 3 months (all knowing that they could get preggers and only 1 didn't use protection).  One of my best friends stopped a full year in advance per her doctors reccomendation because she had been on it so long and was 31 already.

Personally, if I were in your shoes, I would probably stop taking the BCP and seek alternative measures to prevent a baby until we were ready.

BUT.... I want to warn you..i went off the pill for 3 months a year or so ago because I was having some wacky side effects.  Those 3 months were pure hell.  Heavier than ever flow, lasted a LONG time, bad cramps, even though I never had them (even prior to the pill).  Obviously everyone is different.. but I feel like i should say something :).

  • When my Ex H and I were thinking about having a baby I went off the pill because I had heard that if you were on bc for a long time that it could take you longer to get pregnant. WELL.... 4 weeks after stopping birth control, no period was in sight! I was already pregnant! I got pregnant 2 weeks after stopping birth control and my OBGYN said that that happens more often than a lot of people think because my body was still very regular from being on the pill. I was completely shocked that I had gotten pregnant so fast! Wouldn't trade her for the world though!

yeah...I'm aware that something like this may result. So maybe I need to think about what I have coming up in the next few months. No beach vacations at least!!

I've heard about this happening - but that it does take others longer. I guess I just know I want a baby and if I'm going to be one to take months or even a year to begin ovulating again I'll take that risk...as long as I can get my DH on board to take it too :-)

  • Me...I haven't been on the pill since June 2006. I never liked it.

  • i went off the pill last april - two months BEFORE my wedding. I just didn't feel like doing it anymore, honestly, and I can only take a handful of different types because I have Lyden Factor V and I'm prone to blood clots. DH suggested I just stop taking it. We aren't TTC yet, but I've loved not having to take it everyday. I feel better. Now - I have more symptoms when I'm starting - my boobs get huge and horribly sore, and I have cramps - but my period only lasts maybe 5 days. Sorry if that's TMI, but just wanted to share my experience with you!
  • I am in the exact same boat as you.  I had been on ortho-tricyclen lo for a little over 7 years before I stopped taking them in April.  We aren't TTC yet (maybe another 1-2 years) either but I just felt like I was done taking a pill everyday and didn't want to look into other forms, such as an IUD, etc.  Since going off the pill in April I still have not had my period yet (no worries I've taken pg texts to confirm I'm not.)  It's been a little over 90 days with no sign of Aunt Flo and I have an appt. with my gyno next week to hopefully see what is going on and why I haven't had mine yet.

As for side effects of getting off bcp I did have a pretty constant, annoying headache for 10 days a few weeks ago and I've had a couple of breakouts on my face (nothing terrible.)  I'm no help with cramps/how long my period lasted seeing as I haven't had mine yet.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • I can empathize with you. I haven't been on BC as long as you, only about 4 years, but I'm already kind of sick of it. Difference is I do not want to get PG, so I just deal with it.
  • i get off the pill in october to help get rid of it by april of 2011.  condoms her we come, we are both not so happy about that though.  we will see how long that last.

oh, and it has been 10 years since i have been on the pill.

I guess I'm the odd one, I've been on the pill since I was 15 and will probably be on it forver, lol. I just take it in the morning with my vitamins, guess I'm so used to it, it doesn't bother me. I'm thinking about getting an IUD though

I've had break through bleeding every month lately (with proper use). This month it lasted 5 days the week before AF (which will start tomorrow), and another day earlier in the cycle. I just don't even want to bother with trying to get the right level of hormones to correct it.

  • I just stopped taking the pill yesterday. DH is not ready to TTC yet, so we will go back to condoms and I'll be using Fertility Friend, as I did before I started on bc. Honestly, we really won't need the condoms once my body goes back to a more regular cycle, but DH seems to think he has super sperm, lol! Plus I don't think he trusts me, he thinks I'll "trick" him into having a baby.

Fertility Friend is great. I never wanted to even start bc but had to for medical reasons, but I'm even going against my doctors advice now because I hate it so much. When I told a doctor I saw once that I used natural family planning his response was "You know there is nothing natural about that, don't you?". That p!ssed me off!

ETA: I have a friend that got pregnant after being off the pill for 2 weeks too! They had a miscarriage though.

  • Yup.  I went off the pill a month before my wedding.  I'm allergic to latex so we did FAM to abstain for a few months before TTC.  Never had a problem!  I was also coming off of 10 years on BC.  It took my body a while but I regulated soon enough.

  • I've thought about this too... I'm not totally ready to be a mom... but I wonder if I'll ever feel "this is the time" feeling. I've been thinking about it more lately and DH thinks we should wait until I'm established in a school w/ some stability... realistically I agree but the other side of me thinks I should just let nature take it's course and let it happen when it does... For now I'm staying on the pill, but you definitely made me think!
