So... this whole job searching thing isn't happening. It sucks, but I know there isn't much I can do at this point. I spoke to one assistant principal, who pretty much stated that they didn't want to interview me because I hadn't had any experience in the district. I'm trying to figure out how I am supposed to get experience when nobody will hire me. I've taught for 5 years and I have my Bachelor's and Master's degrees both in Elementary Education.
If you were in my shoes would you:
1) Sub and hope something works out (That is actually how I got my previous job, the teacher wasn't working out so I took over her position)
2) Apply for a full time teacher assistant position, which comes with full benefits
3) Apply for an interim teacher assistant position that ends in November and sub after that

I would do this and then sub in the mean time until I heard something.
I'm pretty much in the exact position you are in, minus the 5 years of experience.
I plan on doing the subbing/hoping it leads to something route for 1 year, and then reevaluating after that.

I don't know what it's like for Teaching Assistants where you're from, but where I'm from, that's a pretty crappy job. They get paid like sh!t, and it's not teaching, it's more just being a caretaker for the kids who have special needs. If you're doing that full time, you won't be able to sub, therefore you won't get your foot in the door.
I would absolutely sub as much as you can - that's how you get your foot in the door, get people to recognize you and see that you can do a good job in the classroom. Be the best sub out there, and you're going to get principals knocking down your door trying to get you when teachers are sick or out on inservice. Then when a position comes up, they'll know you and they'll help you get in to something. That's how it's done here anyway!
I was really lucky to get a job straight out of the gate when I graduated last year. Unfortunately, with my move, I'm in a completely different province, so it's back to the lowest level. I'll be subbing until I can my name out there!
Do you get any benefits from your DH job? If so, then I would definitely sub as much as possible! I know it sucks going from having your own classroom to subbing, but it is the best way to get your name out there. If you pick a few districts around where you live to sub in then you can find out who's retiring, going on maternity leave, moving, etc. Then you hand in your resumes to the principals and let them know that you'd LOVE to have them come observe you one day if they have the time.
It's like having an interview before anyone else can even apply for the job!
