For those of you who saved part of your cake

When are you planning on eating it?

H & I didn't relish the idea of year old cake, so we were going to wait for the 18th / one month anniversary.  Then I got impatient.  So it's thawing out in the kitchen as we speak-- er, write. Angel:p

  • we're waiting until our 1 year anniversary. H didn't like the idea at first but we're going to have at least a bite and then toss it if its gross.

  • We've been picking at ours since the the day after the wedding Embarrassed

Our venue did not box it up well and it sat in my mom's fridge until we got back from our honeymoon and at that point it was a do or die situation so we all started digging it.

I haven't bought cereal since we got back because I have been having cake for breakfast!

  • Our DOC saved us a few cupcakes- so sweet, I didn't even ask her to!- but... we ate them already. Ha, oops.?

  • That cake top is long gone. The cake top from my Hoosierville reception is in a Tupperware in my parents freezer. The next time we go that closest to our first anniversary, we'll dig it out and see if it's edible.
  • We will try it and if its gross toss it,. I guess that will be a maybe bc its at H parent's house in the freezer. We have no way of getting it back to where we live without un-thawing it.

  • My mom put a couple of our cupcakes in our freezer. I hadn't planned to.  I'm not into the idea of eating 1 year old desserts, so I'll probably pull them out for our 1 month on the 19th.  We visit this bakery a couple times a month, so why eat their old dessert when we can get fresh ones whenever we want?!?

  • We're waiting until our one year. We did the whole wrap 3 times in saran wrap, 3 times in tin foil thing. If it's gross, we'll have a bite and throw it out.
  • Our top layer got served.  But we have almost the entire bottom layer left.  It's in the deep freezer.  We plan to eat it on our anniversary, one YEAR.  Month anniversaries to me aren't much.  Most people can make it a month.

I think our baker felt bad that they killed the top layer so she is making us a new one next year.  I love her.

  • We couldn't bring ours home from Jamaica, but we already ate the rest of the one from our 1st at-home reception! :)
  • We didn't even save ours. Like some of you have said, who wants to eat year-old dessert? I think I'll probably have the same bakery make us a little cake for our first anniversary. That cake was AWESOME... mmmmm.

Our baker SWEARS that if you wrap it up right, it still tastes wonderful.  And I trust her completely.  But I don't know if I trust the wrapping job by my H and MOH.  LOL.

If the cake had fondant, it acts as a barrier.

  • Knibs, that's pretty awesome of your baker!

Our baker wraps/boxes up the top tier separately so it doesn't get served and all we have to do is put it in the freezer.  We'll eat it at one year as long as we remember to do it.  My parents saved their top tier but forgot about it until like 7 years later- they definitely tossed it!

THAT is awesome.  Saves you time and effort... and the chance of messing it up.

  • Our top in is the freezer, but I may just buy a new top for our 1 year. We'll see when it gets closer to that time.

  • It's in a box in my parent's deep freeze cocooned in foil and saran wrap- specific instructions from our baker.  Like Knibs' baker, she swears if it's done right, it tastes the same.  We'll see in 11 months...

I had a piece of the year old cake topper from when my mom married my stepdad.  Now I was pretty young, but I remember it being pretty good still.

  • We saved ours for our 1st anniversary but I might just go to the bakery we got our cake from and get a "replica" top tear made...we might eat a small piece of the one we saved but we will see!
  • We didn't cut into the groom's cake so we served it at our gift opening we had when we got back from the honeymoon. It was the only piece of my wedding cake I had and it was delish!

We're doing this. I think the idea of saving cake for a year is weird. I guess I'm not really that sentimental about food -- I'd rather enjoy it! I liked that we had enough cake to go around so people could have two pieces (which lots did, it was that good!) and why save a whole tier just to eat it a year later? We ended up with two pieces left, so we ate them the next night before we left for the honeymoon while we read our guest book.

  • Our top tier is in the freezer, anxiously awaiting our 1 year anniversary! It has fondant on it, and it's wrapped in saran wrap in a ziploc freezer bag...hopefully it will taste good! It was delicious at the wedding (and the few days we had it after the wedding :)
  • The top tier is in our freezer.  We are saving it for our one year anniversary.  Everybody that we know has said their cake was still awesome when they had it.  Knowing FI and I, we'll eat it no matter what.
  • We also saved ours. I don't eat cake but H and the family will eat it or aleast attempt to.

  • We were thinking about saving it and decided not to. I'm super picky about sweets, usually. If I'm gunna get the calories, it better be dang good!! We're just going to buy the same cake but smaller from the hometown bakery we bought the wedding cake from. We'll probably get a big enough one for our family to enjoy- they loved the cake!!

P.S. We had the entire bottom tier left (and a little more!) We put half at my parents and half at his aunt and uncle's and it was gone!

  • We froze just 2 pieces in the ILs freezer.  That way if it's gross we didn't waste a whole tier!  We dug into it with the ILs the days following the wedding until we left for the HM, and when we returned they had devoured the whole thing.  :)

*EDIT*  And I didn't answer the question! We'll try to eat those two pieces for our 1-year.

  • We had to serve our top tier :(  I just asked them to save us 2 pieces, which is safely tucked away in our freezer for our one year.  We'll try it & if it's gross, at least we can say we did it.  I have thought about having a replica made though ( like a little 8 inch round cake)

  • we saved 2 pieces for the night after the wedding, but the hotel unexpectedly saved the top tier (we wanted it to be served). we ended up eating it 2 weeks later when we threw a party at our place. almost all our guests were at the wedding and they said the cake was just as good. lol.
