Tell me about Wilmington...please

DH and I are thinking about a possible move from the lovely Middle TN area and are drawn to the beach.  We have spent some time researching and think we would like the Wilmington, NC area.  Please tell me anything and everything about the area. Your likes, dislikes, your opinion on the job market, house market and anything else you would like to add.  I really appreciate anything you can tell me as it will be another couple months before we can actually visit ourselves.  TIA!

Re: Tell me about Wilmington...please

  • Hi there.  I've lived in Wilmington about 8 years as we love it here.  However, there are definitely pros and cons to living in this area.

It's a small city, and has a "small town" feel.  It seems like everyone knows someone you also know.  The job market here is pretty bleak, to be honest.  It always has been, even in good economic times, so right now it's particularly bad.  Pay is low in comparison to Raleigh or Charlotte, and the housing costs don't reflect that lower income. I would DEFINITELY recommend securing a job before making the move.

You can find a lot to do around here.  We have parks, the beach, a great historic district, etc.  If you like live sports or large concerts, you'll have to travel to Raleigh.

It's beautiful here and I think that's the reason we have such an influx of transplants.

  • I lived down there for almost 3 years, and while I miss living at the beach terribly- I don't miss not having a job. I moved down there right after college with no job to come to, and I ended up working 2 or 3 part time jobs at a time to stay a float. It was tough, but I wouldn't take back the experience. It's a great place to live, but the traffic sucks. The infrastructure just doesn't handle all the tourist well. Def. have a job before you up and move.
  • I don't live in Wilmington (I actually just moved about an hour north of there from Ohio) but I did get married in Wilmington and loved it.  The downtown district is a lot of fun!  Its a beautiful place.  Our guests all really enjoyed themselves there (minus downtown parking is a bit of a pain, but I think thats most cities).  I have a friend who went to school there and loved it!  I think it just depends on what you're looking for.  If you're looking for a fun place to live and explore while you're young, I say go for it!  But, I'd take what the other posters are saying to heart because in this economy, having a job is a major plus!
  • Like everam, I'm also a long time Wilmingtonian.  I've been here right at 11 years.   The city has grown due to a lot of transplants, but it still has that small town feel.

Traffic sucks during the summer, but it's still not that bad compared to other cities.  Because of the housing decline, home prices did fall in Wilmington, but they still don't reflect what they should be compared to the median income.  But of course, you do live near the coast.

The job market, unless you are a nurse, is really tough right now.  I have a friend, with a degree, who got laid off about 4 months ago and she's still looking.  Our neighbors recently moved to Charleston because the husband lost his job, too.

Wilmington is a pretty fun, laid back town with a small, but cute historic district.  There's some talent here, as well.  There are several playhouses and theater groups, so if you like going to plays, you'll enjoy that.  We have a pretty eclectic music scene as well, with a lot of independent bands coming through.  If you're into "celebrities," you can also tour Screen Gems studios and watch as movies, tv shows are filmed around town...although honestly, that's been kinda slow lately.  One Tree Hill will be back, though.

Wilmington pretty much connects you with three beaches, Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure.  There's also Ft. Fisher, if you're into Civil War history.

Usually, the weather is pretty good year round, but this past winter was one of the coldest we've had in a while and this past June was the hottest we've had in a while, so go figure.

If you have any other questions, just ask!

  • My mom and sister moved there last year and love it.  I have visited many times and I love it as well.  Even during tourist seasons, the crowds do not seem that bad.  There are a lot of good restaurants as well (to my surprise) that are cheap too!  Especially BBQ!  There is always something going on there.  Great place for families as well.
