present for a new baby

My SIL is having a baby.  Her due date was yesterday.  H and I are going to NY to visit them next Thursday, and I have no idea what to get them as a congratulations present. We've asked if there is anything that they want/need, and they say no.  It's their second kid, so they have most of the basics covered.  I have zero ideas.  They don't know if it's a boy or a girl.  They already have a boy, so if they have a girl, I'm thinking about getting some fun girly stuff, but there's only a 50% chance of that working out. Any thoughts?  It needs to be something small enough to take on a plane...

  • Since they already have all the basics, this means you get to splurge on completely unnecessary stuff.  Buy whatever makes you squee the loudest.

Pretty much. Once the basics are covered, more basics just mean extra stuff you have to store, unless it's diapers or wipes. Those are always a good gift (assuming they're not CDing).

Just buy something fun and personal.

  • When both my nieces were born, I bought them little stuffed animals.  They still have them and know where they came from.  When Ian was born, they each bought him a stuffed animal, so it was sweet to continue that tradition.

  • We didn't need much for our second. I would enjoy ridiculous things that I woulnd't buy on my own. If there's a particular sporting team they enjoy, some sort of outfit related to that. Or some sort of ridiculous animal or viking hat.

  • What about those little keepsake kits where you can take plaster impressions of their hands and feet?  It might be nice to get one for the baby and one for the older brother/sister.

  • Something keepsake-y would be nice. We don't have anything like that for Owen yet.
