Garden-savvy ladies

Is it reasonable of me to think that I could buy a tomato plant this week (at the farmer's market) and expect it to do well if I planted it right away? I have a spot for one or two, and would like to grow my own if it's not too late.

Re: Garden-savvy ladies

  • If you're at the farmer's market (or someplace like Flowerland), I would ask that question and request and honest answer.

My hunch is that it may be too late though.  We could get a frost before most of your tomatoes come ripe.

However, there may be some tomato plants with small fruit (like cherry or romas) that you'll still have time to grow.

Disclaimer: I do not consider myself to be garden savvy.  However, I have successfully grown three tomato plants.  (Woot!)

Oh, hadn't thought about that... der.

When did you put yours in the ground?

  • I planted one in late May, and then one two weeks later in early June.

I think the general rule of thumb in this area is to plant tomatoes around Memorial Day.

Hopefully GRSweetpea checks into this thread.  I bet she'd have good advice on this subject.

  • I am here!  Here is my good advice: don't buy one.  Come to my house.  I'll give you 2 or 5.  We planted all of our seedlings, and it's way too thick in our tomato jungle.

If the NE side is not on your route, we could meet up sometime this week.

I am not on the computer during the day.  I will attempt a PM to you with my contact info.  If you're interested.

If you're bent on buying one... you probably could buy a reasonable advanced plant and get it in in plenty of time before it's too late.
