Carpet Odor...

We've been keeping our two bunnies in a hallway for the past several months until we could get new outside hutches set up.  We moved them out this weekend and I hadn't realized it but one of the water bottles was leaking and getting under the cage which left the carpet with a funky odor.

We've been keeping the windows open a lot because it's been fairly cool still or I would have noticed it sooner I think.  I had smelled it a few times but thought it was coming from our laundry room because we had a leak issue we were working on.  Any ideas for getting rid of the carpet smell?

Re: Carpet Odor...

  • Can you lift the carpet up and replace the padding underneath in that spot or spray it with a cleaner/bleach?  Then shampoo the carpet on top?

I was hoping to do something like this as a last resort... I'd have no idea how to re-lay/attach the carpet after pulling it up.

  • Hmmm....we did it when we lived in our apartment.  But it was thin crappy carpet and it was "inserted" in to the wall....just flipped up.    I would try shampooing with a good cleaner and see if that works first.
  • I have a similar issue going on right now, let me know if you find something that works!

    Will do!

  • I have a recipie that works for pet odors, and it may work for other smells.  Take 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide and stir in 1 tsp of baking soda and one drop of the liquid hand soap like Dial.  Stir it all for 30 seconds in a non metal bowl with a non metal spatula.  Pour a tiny bit on a hidden piece of carpet that doesn't show to make sure the color doesn't run.  Pour it on the area and let it dry by itself.  You can half the amount or double it.  You just have to use it immediately...it will not store.  If the odor is really strong, you may need to repeat the process.

I have used this to take cat/dog urine odor out of carpet and tile and it works like a miracle.

My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!

Awesome!  I will try it this week and report back!
