house-sitting/dog-sitting questions
DH and I are going away for a week later this summer and are trying to decide whether to board Ellie or have a friend or pet-sitter come to stay at our house.
There are a few neighborhood teenagers that are offering their services for house sitting or pet sitting. DH and I are having a bit of a disagreement about how old is old enough to house sit and pet sit while we'd be gone. We'd want the person to actually stay at our house while we're gone (not just stop by to let Ellie out). At what age do you think it would be appropriate for a teenager to do this (if at all)? How much would you think I should pay this person per day?
Re: house-sitting/dog-sitting questions
I think I'm with Feisty. I think college-aged would be good, but then again, it depends on the person. If he/she is a responsible neighborhood kid and the parents are close by then I might be okay with it.
We have someone house/dog sitting for us this summer. He's mid-twenty's and I'm slightly nervous about it just because all of the what-if's.
Dukes--I'm kind of with you. I would be OK with someone younger, as long as they are responsible and they have responsible adults/caretakers to ask a question about what would be "normal" or not in a home. I don't know that the parents of a kid that young would want them to stay alone in someone else's home, but if maybe two of them--again, if you know them, and trust them normally would be a nice situation. In which case, depending on the length of time you'll be gone, maybe pay them about 1/2- 3/4 of the amount you'd pay someone older.
Good luck!
My mom used to have a very "responsible" teenage girl house sit for her when I was away at college. The girl was a junior in high school. Until one day I decided to come home for the weekend and let the girl go home. When she showed back up later that afternoon because she needed to look for one of her friends glasses that they had left there. I kindly informed her she would not be hearing from my mother again, as she ahd obviously had several friends over and had people staying the night at our house.
I started house sitting when I was a freshman in college. I now board my dog or get a friend to watch her. When I do get a friend to watch her I pay her 15-20 dollars a day. Depending on if she is staying at our condo or our house. Often times watching a house can be a little more tedious with a little more upkeep.
