Friend/dinner vent

I have dinner with a friend tonight. She doesn't do anything without her BFF. NOTHING. I know I know from the past that if I invite her to do something, BFF automatically is included. I like BFF okay, but we are so alike that we really don't get along all that well (after much self-analyzing I came up with this as the reason).

Friend had a baby and I haven't met her yet so she has been saying, "When you are up, let's have dinner!" I had a free night this week so I said, "Let's have dinner" and invited her and baby. And now BFF is coming too (of course). It is fine, but we would get a lot more caught up if BFF wasn't there.

And no, I can't request she not bring her. I did this once before and it caused some really weird stress between us for a while. They have a very co-dependent relationship with one another that borders on unhealthy, but it's not my business.

These situations are frustrating... can you say to her (before she says that the bff is coming) that you were hoping to just see her as you don't get to spend much time with her and want to have quality 1:1 time?

I tend to encounter it when you plan a girls night and a friend asks if hubby can come along! As much as I love my husband, I want/ need time with friends to catch up and keep relationships. It's awkward as heck to say "no"... but it's completely necessary.

  • I know how you feel! Like Mesa, mine is more the husband/boyfriend thing. I obviously love my fiance more than anything, but I spend most of my time outside of work with him. And I spend work with all men! So many times I need just girl time, but my friends always seem to need their significant other there! I think it's extremely important to have a life outside of my relationship with girlfriends.

It's a tough situation, but I too would mention to your friend that you were really hoping it could just be you and her (and her baby) so that you could have one on one time with her and catch up on personal things since you don't get to see her as often as you would like or as often as her BFF!

  • That's just weird.  Doesn't sound like there's a whole lot you can do about it, unfortunately.  You could preemptively try the "I'd really like some 1:1 time with you" line next time as PP suggested, but sounds like she might take that the wrong way.

  • She will take any implication that I don't want BFF around as an insult. I tried that once before, it did not go over well at all.

    Oh well.

And I am bored, start posting, people! FB is down, gmail is down, and my rescue email is down. What is a girl to do (well, besides work...)

And the Nest is up?  Wow, I'm a little bit shocked! Stick out tongue

Didn't you have a million and one meetings that were supposed to keep you occupied this week?  Not that I'd be complaining about less meetings!

I am on down time until 11! Then I am on and off until 4. One of my major projects that was to be focused on this week was canceled by the project manager (much to my boss's dismay) so that, unfortunately, freed up a lot of time for me this week. And the admin is out and she has all of my filing and I would do it, but since she is out, I have no idea where she organizes it! That would have taken a good hour to pass time!

  • I wish your office was closer to mine, then we could go grab a cup of coffee.  And I brought some of the brownies I baked last night to work with me ;)

I would jump on lunch with you! Pooh. I was hoping you were at least within a mile or 2 of me! I leave tomorrow, let's hope it doesn't take me 24 hours to get home! lol.

  • Your FB is down?! I wish mine was! I need to stop wasting time on there! I'm bored too! Today is a slow day at my office and this weather is making me sleepy! My brother/boss is out of the office for now so I am creeping on facebook and playing scrabble on pogo.com =) And of course checking back here often, you girls keep me entertained!

  • I have a similar problem, but mine is my BFF who invites everyone to everything. If I want to see her on her own, I have to be explicit, but fortunately she doesn't get offended. Even then, a random cousin or friend from high school still creeps in from time to time :)
