considering a move to cincy...

...and looking for some opinions. What do you like/dislike about Cincinnati? We visited this weekend, and are considering buying a house in Mt Lookout, Oakley, or Hyde Park. Any insider tips? We live in Chicago currently, so hoping to move somewhere that is pedestrian and family friendly.

Thanks for your help!

Re: considering a move to cincy...

  • Those three are pretty pedestrian, you may want to look into Mariemont as well--housing costs are about the same, but property taxes are higher (they have their own school district, the others are Cincinnati Public). Mariemont is VERY family friendly (more so than the other three imho) and pedestrian--people walk everywhere in good weather. You may still have to drive to the grocery store, but it's pretty close to everything (it's about 5 minutes from Oakley/Hyde Park).
  • If you plan to have children any time soon, you may want to stick with Mt. Lookout & Hyde Park. They fee into the highly rated Kilgour charter school. It's through grade 6 and then you choose Cincy Public (poorly rated) or go private. Just somethign to consider. We lived in Hyde park for 4 years and LOVE it. Great, great area. there is a good mix of singles, college age, families, and older folks in both areas.

I grew up here and DH is only licensed to practice here and Indy so we are not highly mobile currently, however it's a great city to be "stuck" in. We just moved to Madeira and are really loving all of the suburban activities- street parades, street dances, farmers market. We are right off the "main drag" of restaurants and shops and have a library, 2 parks, and a couple of bars just steps away.  Taxes are high, but the schools are great and it's a very well kept community. Near to us, a bit further from the city are also Kenwood and Montgomery. Great schools, lots going on in the community, and still right off of 71, only 15 minutes from downtown.

I love mariemont, but it's not quite as accessible as I prefer, so we didn't really look there.  Oakley is very cool, but the schools are poor and there are no great charter schools to choose.  Same iwth Columbia Tusculum, but there are some really cool, affordable homes in the area with low taxes.

Once you get settled post again for the best places to eat, shop, drink.  We'll give you lots of ideas for those! :)

  • I agree with PP about Madeira. I live in a city next to Madeira and go down that way often (I love the farmer's market!). It was also ranked #1 in the top 50 communities. This link may help you too.

  • Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate it!  Sounds like we're not crazy for considering the move.
  • I was also going to suggest Madeira.  My DH is from there and I grew up a couple miles away.  I highly suggest Madeira but make sure that you only look at homes within the "downtown" area because there are lots of homes in Madeira that wouldn't be within walking distance of shops/restaurants.

Cincinnati is a great place to raise a family.  It's also quite close knit (many people are raised here and stay here). So, it could prove a bit more difficult to meet people and make friends. It's also quite conservative, IMO. but, once you get settled, I think most people really love the city. You have all the things you need- major league teams, river, parks, great shopping/rest. minus the traffic and distance (most everything is driveable within 30 minutes).

I'm curious if you are mvoing for work or just need a change?

  • I keep meaning to add that there is a very cute house for sale on my street...we could use a few more younger families around!  Let me know if you want the listing info :)
  • We're basically just looking for a change....while we love Chicago, it's entirely too expensive.  Between real estate, the likely need for private schools, etc., it just doesn't seem worth the cost anymore.

Mindiosu -- we are a bit concerned about the ability to meet people in Cincinnati.  My husband believes it to be a bit "cliquey", which I think goes along with what you mentioned about it being close knit.  Definitely a concern given we don't have family or anything in the area....at the same time, I do hear of quite a few transplants, so it seems like it must be doable?  Ugh, the stress....

  • There are a ton of us Nesties on the east side of the city (we're near to Mariemont), so when you guys make your move we should do a get together! Do you guys have any hobbies or activities you like to do in Chicago? We might be able to direct you to some local clubs/places.

I have to make it over to the farmers market in Madeira, is it as good (or better) than the one in Hyde Park?

Oh, and if you're looking for a dog friendly neighborhood, Hyde Park and Madeira both fit into that category really well.

  • Shoot!  I didn't mean to add stress to your decision.  So sorry!  Cincinnati is a really great city and the cost of living is pretty great.  I know quite a few expats that are settled and really love it here.  There are plenty of opportunities to meet people- young professionals groups, volunteer activities, loads of runs/walks, museum events, etc.  Definitely let us all know what you decide and where you start looking at houses!

the Madeira Farmers market is great! The waffle/crepe guy is there and it seems a bit more of an event- not just buy your things and go.  There's live music and lots of people seem to hang out. The biggest down side is that it starts at 3:30 and ends at 7 (tough for me and DH to get there).  Definitely worth checking out.
