teaching in a small town

i am from a big city up north and went to a big well known school up there was as well. I applied for a teaching position in a very small town in NC I already live here I am just from up north. Anyways I think it may be held against me though because every teacher in the school is from that area, graduated from that HS and is now back living in that town and teaching. Literally every single one..what are my chances for job. I am qualified however this kind of freaked me out.

I used to teach in a small town, now I'm in Wake County.  I loved teaching there.  Small is good because you really get to know everyone and typically it's more of a friendly family atmosphere.  As long as you are qualified I don't think being from another area would affect your chances with the job.  Good luck!
  • Depending on the needs of the school and who else is applying your chances may be smaller. My dh got a job at a super small school and he is an outsider. Many of the teachers are from this area and went to that school.  It is crazy but that how it works in small towns.

Good luck! I'd suggest making friends with the principle if you could that seems to help. Or find someone who knows someone in the school. Social politics are big in small towns.

  • funny thing a good friend of mine his father taught there and the position is his position because he retired last year..mmmm wish there was a way to leverage that ehhh
  • Well, I think you should probably stop thinking and referring to yourself as an outsider and try to assimilate a little bit more with the community.  I have seen that many of my friends from HS have also gotten jobs back at our old high school--but that's up north in a not-so-small town, so it seems like many schools might prefer to hire the devil they know rather than the devil they don't know, kwim?

Good luck to you.  I know how frustrated you must feel--but stay positive, optimistic, and friendly!  You'll find your way into that school in no time.
