Being a good bridesmaid?

This is going to sound totally stupid, but bear with me...

I'm leaving tomorrow to for a destination wedding. It's my first time being a bridesmaid (my M.O.H. is getting married!!!). I'm worried about what I need to bring with me...

Here's the thing. My bridesmaids were rock stars. I never stressed once during my wedding, because I know they had brought anything and everything we'd need AND they were just "prepared." Now the thing is, I don't really remember what they had and/or did. I just remember not worrying about anything that day because they took care of everything.

That being said, I would like to be equally rock star-y for her now that it's her wedding day...but since I don't really know/remember what she did, I'm not sure what all that entails! Here's what I'm packing/bringing so far -- can you tell me if I'm missing anything? Or if there was something one of your bridesmaids did that was extra awesome for you?

Packing List:

Dress, shoes, accessories (duh)

Pajamas/Getting ready clothes/non-wedding event clothes

Emergency bag -- full of everything including kleenex, extra deoderant, bobby pins, safety pins, Tide pen, chalk, clear nailpolish, nail files, corsage pins, Advil, etc. This is actually the fifth wedding this bag will be used in -- it's been passed around from friend to friend. We just restock it with anything that got used before.

iPod + wall charger

DVDs (the bride mentioned to me that the room we're staying in has a player, so I figured I'd bring some just in case. Any suggestions on what to watch?)

Anything else???

Re: Being a good bridesmaid?

  • Have you discussed drinks while getting ready?

Are the B&G staying in a hotel room you can decorate?

My mom is actually her DOC also, and she's doing a big basket of snacks and drinks (water and Champagne, I believe) for the morning/mid-afternoon of getting ready.

They ARE staying in a hotel room, but I don't know if we can get into it...I think the groom is staying in the room the night before. I'll bring some things (silk rose petals, maybe? what else?) with just in case.

  • Your Camera?

I don't know where the wedding is - I'm assuming beachy - maybe look for a sunscreen that will last without feeling icky (I recently bought something, Sheer something or other by Hawaiian Tropic).

Is there something that she does (eats/reads/thinks about/looks at/drinks/smokes - whatever) when she gets really stressed?  (I know if some people get stressed that like to eat - does she have a favorite snack that may not be availbile in the hotel?).

  • At my sister's wedding the things we actually used out of the e-kit...

    • scissors
    • floral tape - to make some last minute arrangements for the mom's to carry when the originals didn't work out
    • Tums
    • Bandaids for blisters
    • Sewing Kit to fix a button on the guitarist's shirt
    • Hairspray
    • Sunscreen - it was an outdoor wedding
    • Crackers

Do you have flip flops to change into for the reception?  Do you have a camera packed?  Has someone ordered lunch for the day of while you're getting ready?  Offer your cell phone number to be a contact for vendors/wedding planner so they aren't calling the bride.

  • You may be able to have the front desk people help in leaving things in the room. Petals, a little note, a bottle of champagne on ice. Maybe even arrange to buy them breakfast in bed the next morning if they're not doing a special brunch.

    Breakfast for the following morning.

  • Is that spare deodorant the spray type? This was one of the things my DOC was missing and I could have used with an outdoor wedding.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • My MOH used a mini sewing kit to bustle the dresses of the other BMs. I could see a sewing kit being handy if someone loses a button, busts a zipper or if a bride has a bustle issue.

Was gonna say snacks and beverages, but sounds like thats covered.  I second the camera idea too.  Its always neat to see the different perspectives from the candid shots.

  • Second the mini sewing kit - we used one just a few weeks ago at my BFF's wedding when the hook & eye at the top of the zipper broke

Also, I've heard some stain remover pens/wipes leave stains (I think Tide ones leave a blue ring) where you removed the stain, actually making it worse.  I've been told you should use vodka instead although I have never actually tried it.

  • Hollywood Fashion tape helped us out a lot. Some of my bridesmaids' dresses werent sitting quite right (the ruching was bulging a little) and this helped to stick the fabric down so it didn't stick out. It works both on dress/dress and dress/skin if you are nervous about any clothing sliding out of place.

Make sure that you or someone else keeps tabs on the bride's makeup touch-up kit. Mine got stowed away in my bridesmaids hotel room and I didn't have access to it until well into the reception. Thankfully, there were no emergencies, but I would have liked to touch up my makeup once or twice during the day, especially for photos in between ceremony & reception.

And aother vote for the Camera ? I really appreciated my bridesmaids taking pictures at times when the pro photographers weren't around ? like during dinner, in the limo, and the end of the night after the photogs left. I was very thankful to be able to remember those moments too.

  • also, ive heard that chalk covers stains that won't come out (assuming her dress is white and not ivory).

  • Thanks ladies!!! I really appreciate the advice. I've written down any of the suggestions you made that we didn't already have in our kit. I'm headed to Target in about 20 minutes.
