s/o - work fashion question

My first day of work is Monday.

I had two interviews and nobody was wearing a suit...everyone was business casual.  (one interview was on a Friday, the other mid-week, so it's not just a Friday thing).

Can I assume I can go business casual on Monday, or would you still show up in a suit on your first day?

Re: s/o - work fashion question

  • I wouldn't wear a suit jacket but I dunno what you do. It can't hurt and you can just pretend like you were wearing the jacket as an actual jacket if you feel more comfortable taking it off later.

  • You are always better off being overdressed than underdressed.  I would wear a suit and remove the jacket if you feel that you can scale things back.  No one is going to laugh at you for dressing nicely on your first day.
  • I would wear a pants suit, where you can comfortably take off the jacket once you get there.

My firm is super casual, though. Today, I'm wearing jeans, sneakers, and a plain long sleeved t-shirt. We dress like this most days we don't have court or client meetings.

  • ditto along the lines of sugrfrejaz -- I'd bring a suit jacket with (wear it in and take it off at your desk), and make sure what you wear underneath is ok w/out a jacket, kwim?

  • Ok suit it is!  Thanks!  I've been wearing sweat pants and tank tops every day since June, so it is going to be hard to break out of this rut.
  • If everyone was business casual, that's what I'd wear.
  • My first day here, I wore pants, a blouse, and a blazer. I took the blazer off halfway through the day.

You'll probably be meeting everyone on your first day, so it doesn't hurt to look extra nice. Good luck!!

  • My first day here I wore a pants suit - light grey and fitted, so that it would be formal enough if necessary.  I got a formal copy of the dress code that day, and have dressed business casual since.  It's always best to err on the side of conservative.  Fashion wise, that is :)

  • First day, suit, definitely. Second day, wear what the natives are wearing.
  • I just wanted to say congrats and good luck!
