Vent... My parents are moving out of the country :(

Here goes my first vent...

My husband and I were just down in Florida for a friend's wedding.  We stayed at my parents house because they live in the same town as the wedding was.  They decided to break the news to us that they have decided to move out of the country.

They explained that it is a good move for them financially because my Dad has a wonderful job opportunity there and they have family there etc.  I really do want to be happy for them and I am but I can't help but feel sad at the same time.   They will be a 12 hour plane ride away and the time difference is 7 hours. Now, we can take a long weekend trip if we want but that won't be the case anymore.

I am extremely close to my parents and speak to them at least once per day.  I know that it's not like they live right next door now but the idea of them being so far is really hard.  My sister (who also lives in another state) is taking it much better than I am.

What my parents don't know is that my husband and I are TTC.  It really makes me sad to think that my kids won't know their grandparents as well as I would like them to.

Now when my Mom calls she is calling to ask if I want items in the house (furniture, old toys etc.) before they move.  I am really thrilled for them and know that it is a good opportunity for them but is it wrong of me to be giving them a little bit of a hard time about it?

  • Though I would truly be happy for my parents if I were in your shoes (and slightly happy for myself, NEW VACATION SPOT!!) I cannot say I wouldn't give my parents a hard time. I am pretty close with my parents and go to them for everything. And I can tell you if we were TTC, I would be even more upset because I would definitely need my mother around. I would suggest maybe buying you and your parents web cams. I know it's not the same, but you can connect with them that way instead of just talking on the phone. Download the program "skype" and have web cam dates with them! Schedule a time every week to have one that works for both of you and stick with it! I'm so sorry you are going through this. I would definitely feel the same way as you though, you are not alone!

  • Ditto Skype, I think it'll be a great resource for you.

Did they tell you they were even thinking about moving out of the country?  I'm with PP in that I'd be thinking, "yay for a free place to stay while on vacation overseas!"  But it's not wrong of you to have a problem with it; it's a big change and would be even harder to deal with if you didn't know this was something they were considering.

Oh, and what country if you don't mind sharing?

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Aw, I'm sorry Jess, my parents live in FL and I feel like that is too far most of the time, I can't imagine if they moved out of the country!
  • Where are they relocating?

  • Thanks for your support ladies. They are moving to Israel.  I was completely shocked as I had no idea until they told me last week.

I am very excited to visit.  I am typically a very positive person and always like to see the best in things but this situation is really making it a bit more difficult to do that because it will be such a big change.  Yes, I am so glad that Skype was invented because I will definitely be using it :)

  • Isreal!  That's exciting!

I know it's a big change.  And like you said with all the technology (skype etc..) the world isn't that big of a place anymore.  You'll miss them, sure, but it may not be as bad as it seems right now.  Chin up  :-)

I think this aspect of it is what would bother me the most.  At least if they'd told you it was a possibility you would have had some time to get used to the idea.  That's a big thing to announce once it's already decided!

  • I would be upset as well.

Don't you hate it when people say, "At least you have a super duper fun place to visit!" I want to slap people who say that to me when my family moves.  I was so devastated when my sister moved from Louisville to San Francisco and wanted to slap every single person who got all hunky dory about a vacation spot. Luckily, she only stayed 1 year before moving back to the midwest, so that was good!

  • I'm sorry - the shock of it would be the worst part I think!

My parents moved to VA last year and that was hard enough - I can't imagine them moving to another country so far away!

    ((hugs))
