Gettysburg recommendations

Hello!

I'm heading soon to Gettysburg to camp w the family and didn't know if anyone had any recommendations of good places to eat or tour or do a ghost tour... or even ones to NOT go to.  (we already have our camp place selected, just not any tours, etc)  I think we def want to do a ghost tour and eat at one of those 'period inns'.  We'll also have our bikes, too.

 TIA!

Re: Gettysburg recommendations

  • If you want to do the battlefield tour book one of the licensed guides through the park service http://www.gettysburgtourguides.org/reservations.html  It is easier than the bus tour - the guide will drive your car and fit the tour towards your interests.

You also have the option of doing a bus tour - but it is cheaper to just get the guide in your own car, than to pay for more than two people to go on the guided tour bus.   You can do the tape tour on the double decker bus, take a big hat, sunscreen, and water.    You can also purchase a CD of the same thing and drive yourself around.

Dobbin House is usually pretty good for food easy to get to.  http://www.dobbinhouse.com/

I've only done the Ghosts of Gettysburg tour, and that was a while ago.  I had a friend that worked for the Black Cat ones - not sure if the storytellers that worked with her are still there, they were pretty good from what she said. Looking at a quick review of the reviews on google - half of them are mixed up about which tour company they went with.

  • We were there a few weeks ago and did Dobbin House for lunch and Blue Parrot for dinner. Both great, but Blue Parrot was absolutely amazing, all the way from their apps to dessert!
  • for 'period' restaurants - love the dobbin house. i do not recommend the farnsworth's house food.

blue parrot is fantastic but not period.

check out the new visitors center and cyclorama!

  • I also vote for the Dobbin House and the Blue Parrot!

  • Like the others have said, Dobbin House (or the Tavern) is always a good option.  Blue Parrot isn't one of the period inns, but they do have good food, as does the Pub on the square.  Another period inn you may be interested in is about 10 mins outside of Gettysburg on 116 - The Fairfield Inn (in Fairfield) - it was built in 1757 and is pretty neat.
