*snowyowl* tell me about living in Prague

I really want to visit Prague and wish I could have done it when I did the big European tour post-college.  A friend of mine is from the Czech Republic and just got back from something like a 6-week visit home.  She brought me a cute little book with pics of architecture and whatnot in Prague.

I know you said you lived there for a year, what brought you there?  Did you like it?  Do you wish you could have stayed longer or were you glad to come home?

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Re: *snowyowl* tell me about living in Prague

  • DH and I were both graduating from grad school and feeling a little unprepared to enter the real world. So we decided to do a year abroad teaching ESL instead of settling in to look for regular jobs :)

We chose Prague because DH had been there before and really liked it, and we also knew a guy who had done it through a school that automatically hired you if you passed their TEFL course. That seemed relatively low-risk, so we headed over two months after we got married in the summer of '08.

We were there for a little less than a year. While the city was lots of fun, we were definitely ready to come home at the end of it! The job was rough. The school was disorganized and since we went to the students instead of them coming to us, we were constantly commuting, sometimes up to 4 or 5 hours a day. I teach ESL in Boston and love it, so it was definitely the commuting that made it not so fun.

Prague is actually a fairly small city. I usually tell people they can do the city really thoroughly in less than a week. You can hit the big sites in just a couple days. As a place to visit, I would highly recommend it. As a place to live, I would be a little more reserved.

I hope that answers your questions! Always happy to chat about Prague is there is anything else you want to know :)
