Counter offering and other jazz

I need some helping ova here. This might be a little long.

I got a job offer today, which I am excited about, but I'm having a hard time deciding what to do. Here is the situation.

This job is with a large, reputable company. It's a new position, under development still, which means that it will likely end up flexing a little bit to my strengths. However, I'm unsure if it's really in the direction I want to go. I have an interview with another company scheduled for Monday. I have also been in casual talks with one of the VPs at a university about potential careers for me with them. The university is probably where I want to work the most. I am submitting applications today for two different positions there, with no idea about whether I will even make a short list, much less be offered anything.

SO, my plan right now is to accept this current offer. It doesn't start until August 3rd, so that would hopefully give me time to respectfully withdraw if something else was offered to me that I felt was a better opportunity. The big thing I'm stuck on is the money. They offered me less than what I was making at my last job, citing their excellent benefits and employee programs as part of the total rewards. It makes sense, but it's still about 3-4K under what I really wanted my bottom line to be.

So I want to counter offer, but am concerned about how to go about doing it. I want to choose my words carefully so that I'm the right balance of diplomatic and enthusiastic about the job offer, but also assertive and confident in my worth as an employee.

Help a sista out? Share previous experience? Ideas?

Re: Counter offering and other jazz

  • With the exception of my first job out of university I have always counter offered. Sometimes they won't go for more money but you can get more vacation or vested into RRSP matching right away.

Are you currently working? If so you could say "I am currently making xyz amount and am looking to keep the same compensation level. Would you be able to match this?"

  • Thanks for the advice. :)

I'm not currently working. The funding for my old position was cut, so it was dissolved as of June 30th. So I don't have that leverage. I did cite my previous pay though, as the responsibilities of the positions are very similar. And I cited my education level and experience. I didn't ask them to match my old pay, I counter offered at slightly less. But that is because my old job had no benefits, and this company is a top 100 employer and has some of the best benefits and employee programs around, so that is worth quite a bit in the total compensation package.

After speaking with my university contact tonight, I'm not sure I'm going to accept the position at all though. Either way, I'll hear back from them tomorrow about my counter offer and decide then I guess.
