Laptop help

This morning I noticed my laptop (Acer Aspire) was not charging. I tried a few different outlets and nada. The green light on the adapter is on, but right now it's just running off the battery.

If I take it into Staples, will they be able to diagnose me? Do I just need a new power cord or adapter?

Re: Laptop help

  • This happened to my mom's HP a few weeks ago.  She called HP and they told her to do a "hard reset" not sure what that all involved but they talked her through it over the phone and everything was fine.  You might trying call Acer before you take it to Staples if they have a customer service line.  Not sure if Staples will charge you a diagnostic fee or not.
  • hawki, last time I had a computer issue and called Acer it resulted in me wiping the hard drive. When I took it into Staples, they were able to see that the touchpad button had been pushed down, which was my problem. Plus I have a two-year protection plan on it through Staples, and the people at my local Staples are like kings of customer service. I'm just really worried. :(

  • If you have the protection plan, I would take it in to Staples. (BTW - had no clue they even did this.  I thought they just sold copy paper and office chairs.)  It sounds like the problem we had with our Dell and we ended up needing a new charger because one of the connectors at the end was worn.

  • Basically the computer is not recognizing the A/C adapter is plugged in. But the A/C adapter is still showing a steady green light, which makes me think something is wrong with the cord. Does that sound right?

  • In that case, I would 100% take it to Staples.  It definitely sounds like it could just be your connection.

This happened to my Gateway about a year ago. I just ordered a new adapter, and it was back to normal. Since you get such great customer service, I might just give them a call to make sure.

  • Hoping if it's adapter/cord, they sell replacements in store!

Would it also be beneficial to know I fried out my last Acer completely because the power cord had been damaged and had open wires? :-/

My computer's my life force, man. At least if it's down for a few days I still have my iPhone!

  • It sounds exactly like what we had and a new adapter worked like a charm.

It is amazing though how much less I am on the computer now that I have my droid though.

  • Mames, based on this info and what you posted on FB, I'd definitely say it is your cord.  Sounds like it isn't the end that plugs into the wall (since the green light is on), but rather the connection part into your computer.

If you are taking it to Staples, I'd take your laptop too.  There could be a slight possibility that it is the connection on your computer (where you plug it in), but my guess is still that it is the cord.

  • Thanks guys!

I figure based on everything, plus the history of my last Acer, it's the cord from the adapter to the computer, too.  I have my laptop and cords with me at work so I can just shoot off to Staples on the way home. Say a little prayer!

lucky, as much as I love my iPhone, it's hard to read a lot of Nest posts on it!

  • That stinks Mamie.  Hopefully it's just the power cord and it will be a cheap fix.
