Sorry I've been MIA, Advice for Ankle Sprain Anyone?

I hope everyone has been well.  Sorry I've been MIA.  I sprained my ankle on vacation in Europe last month (and walked on it the rest of the week on vacation) and that turned everything upside down once I returned.  I've been taking care of it and resting the past four weeks and it is still painful and difficult to walk on!  Doctors aren't too helpful.  I am really bummed and getting concerned that I can't do normal walking after this long.  It is even worse being in NYC with the bad streets and excessive walking so I have not really been leaving my apartment very much.  Any advice from fellow sufferers??

  • I am sorry to hear about your hurt ankle. I would go see a different doctor for a 2nd opinion. No other advice, sorry.

  • I had a vicious sprain last spring.  I'd go with taking some form of anti-inflammatory (ie Motrin), icing after walking, etc.

Google "Star Excursion" for an exercise that improves ankle stability.  Briefly, you stand on the injured leg and heel tap or toe tap at points on an "imaginary star" around you.  (imagine your planted injured foot is the center of the star and there are 8 lines that radiate from the center that you touch.-or imagine touching all of the "hours" around a clock that is centered on your foot.

Try with your eyes closed as well.  Lots of literature to indicate that this and similar balance exercise dramatically improve ankle stability after sprains and reduce re-injury.

Heat may make it feel better, but will only increase inflammation if you apply heat after walking/exercise.  So only apply heat after ice, or at a resting time of the day.

Don't over-immobilize, it will only take longer to heal and atrophy the supporting muscles/structure.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your sprain! I'd definitely go for another opinion...maybe see an orthopedic Doctor. Unfortunately, I have no other advice, but I hope you feel better soon. =)

  • no big advice here, just moral support--i dislocated my knee in may, and it's still not 100% yet, either.  SO FRUSTRATING!

i have a physiatrist (yep, that's a real doctor--a motion specialist), and he's reeeeeeally good at what he does, but he is also an azzhole.  if you don't mind horrific bedside manner, i am happy to recommend him!  Stick out tongue

    feel better!

  • Thanks so much for the support ladies!  Thanks for the advice dnagal.  I'm definitely not ready to stand on the injured leg for long enough to do that star exercise though.  I'll try it a bit later.  I did see an Orthopedist 3 weeks ago and he checked for fracures and completely torn ligaments and said it was fine and to do some special exercises, along with the "it depends" how long it takes to heal.  He did say I won't be thinking about it 6 weeks post injury  and didn't seem too concerned.  Well, I have a week and a half left, maybe it will magically disappear ha-ha.

To top it off we got stuck with a huge ER bill when we thought ER visits were completely covered by insurance.   I am really not up to spending more money to see another specialist who is going to spend 5-10 mins with me, take my money, say "it depends" and send me on my way.

Firedancer, sorry to hear about your knee!  I am not too fond of rude doctors but I appreciate the offer :)
