Has anyone else done this and had just a terrible time? Neither DH nor I had ever house sat before, so we agreed to for DH's aunt and uncle, who have a very nice house with very nice TV's, etc. etc. But I just cannot relax when I'm there-it's like cooking in someone else's kitchen and sleeping in their bedroom just stresses me out. Am I just a bit crazy? What do you all think about living in someone else's house?
Re: House sitting
HH used to house- and dog-sit for his coworkers a lot. He was the only reliable single guy on staff, so he was popular! I would go over on weekends (he had permission to have me there). I always loved it. It is a little weird at first, and I would have this odd feeling that somebody was going to come home and go "What the @#$% are you doing here?!" but that wears off.
One of his coworkers wants us to house-and-dog-sit next week, actually, and I'm not sure how we're going to make that work. I love staying at their house, but it will double my commute time, and it leaves our needy cat home alone longer than he likes. But if I don't go, I have to live and sleep alone, and we're still newlyweds! I'm not sick of HH yet!
I house and dog sat for my old boss for a week a few years ago. HH and I stayed there together (we were living together at the time, and she was the one who offered for us BOTH to stay, she knew it would feel less weird to be there together). It was weird for the first day or two, but she was a really cool boss and she even told us that it would be fine if we had friends over...so we did! We had a little get-together and it was so fun. We felt like we were playing house, because we were living in a tiny one-bedroom apartment at the time, and she had this stellar house in a really ritzy neighborhood.
The only negative part was that she had this little toy poodle who was totally annoying (this was before we got our own dog) and one night he jumped up on her bed and PEED on it!! I freaked because we had been vigilant about taking him outside to do his business, but he did it because he was stressed...he had anxiety issues. And the pee soaked right through the sheets into the mattress, and left a big stain. That was really awful, but she understood because she knew her dog was crazy.
