Companies offering Telecommute?
I've been unemployed for four years, trying to find work all this time. Both my kids will be in school this year and I'm trying to find companies that offer telecommute. I don't have anyone that can watch my kids during school breaks. The local schools out here are not hiring. Does anyone know of any companies that offer telecommute that I can apply for?
Also, is there anyone that can help me with a cover letter? Maybe with the wording to see if they'll consider telecommute?
Thanks so much.
Re: Companies offering Telecommute?
No, I don't have a teaching background. I was just looking for anything in a school to be on the same schedule as my kids incase I can't find telecommute.
I came from medical/dental insurance. I have almost 10 yrs experience in that field. Plus 14 years customer service experience. I've applied at all the major companies that I can think of, United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna (my previous employer). I'm trying to find companies that will be flexible so I can be home at least during their days off and school breaks if I can't find full time telecommute.
I will definitely put my thinking cap on and get back to you with more ideas if I can think of them.
Have you thought about local colleges and universities? Another idea, though it is not in your field is childcare. You could find another mother who is in need of childcare and offer services at your home or hers. Maybe it can be a teacher who has summers off anyway? I am in the childcare recruiting field but unfortunately don't service the Central Mass area yet.
I know that there are lots of sales positions that usually offer virtual offices (advertising sales etc.). I will keep thinking...
I'm going to be honest with you, but want to say in advance that I'm not trying to discourage you or be mean. I think it's going to be really hard to find a job with the kind of telecommuting options you're looking for. Plus, you want to make as much money as you used to while working full time? And get all those benefits in this economy? It's just not realistic. If there were jobs like what you're describing, there wouldn't be so many women out there having the SAHM vs. working mom debate.
I think the sooner you accept the realistic options--either work part time and make less money or full time and find someone to care for your kids--the better off you'll be. If you do become a single parent, hopefully you'd get some kind of alimony/child support. No matter what, if I were you I'd look at getting a part time job now rather than waiting for the ideal full time job to come along. It's OK to get back on the horse a little bit at a time.
Good luck to you. Please feel free to ask more questions; like I said I don't mean to discourage you but felt like a reality check might be in order.
Rock, thanks for the tip and your input. Trust me, a reality check isn't needed. I am full aware of my reality and what needs to be done. I've been applying all over the place for any job I can do (as well as looking for telecommute). The jobs are out there. I just applied for a full time telecommute with United Healthecare yesterday morning. Hopefully my resume will get picked up.
I will check out that site you mentioned, thank you!
And basically, what was mainly asking is for some other company names that possibly offer telecommute that I could research on my own.
Thanks!
I know how frustrating job hunting can be. Hope you find something soon. Oh, and sorry I don't know of any other companies in the insurance field.
Try medical billing, trascript, or online tutoring.
Most companies, especially local ones, will not consider telecommute unless you have put a lot of time into an office environment. I telecommute, but I put 2 years into my company and I only do it because DH got a job 1600 miles away and I'm the only employee globally who does this job.
We do have a few telecommuters in Chicago, Dallas, and across EU but again, they put time into the office before graduating to this.
Dh did telecommuting for a while. He's in IT security, but he has a pretty extensive, lucrative background, not sure what your background is based on your OP, so I'm not sure if any of this is helpful.
You could try The Monitor Group, depending on what your experience is, but if you haven't worked in a few years, they aren't likely to consider you. It's worth a shot though.
Thanks, Punky. Oh, I know. Cigna has (or least when I was there) the same policy about working in the office for a specific time frame before telecommute was an option. I'll definitely look into your suggestions!
Rock, I was on linkedIn, but recently closed it. I didn't really find it helpful, but it could have been me. Maybe I'll sign up again. And that's the other part I'm having a hard time with, trying to find an HR rep/recruiter to follow up with. But I'll keep plugging away.
Thanks for all of your posts. They are greatly apprecaited. :-)
It gets more helpful the more people you plug in. Then you can do searches on specific companies and it will show you if you know anyone (or know anyone who knows anyone) who works there. Start re-connecting with your old colleagues if you can. The great thing about LI is that you don't get a bunch of random spam or e-mail updates, you can just go use it when you want to or ignore it if you don't. I know recruiters search on it as well, so if I were you I'd basically put my resume up there (look around at other profiles to see how others have theirs set up--some people just do titles and companies, others actually put info about what they did in their positions).
