Stupid/Random ?

Can anyone explain to me about these silly/fun bands that you see a lot of children (and even some adults) wearing?  I know when I was in high school or college a lot of schools near my parents were banning bracelets like those due to the s3xual connotation that was associated with them.  So I guess I just don't "get it" now... especially when I see like 5 year olds with them up to their elbows.

Anyone with children/younger family members who can explain it to me?

Re: Stupid/Random ?

  • Well clearly I can't answer this question since I just looked up "silly bandz" in google because I had no idea what you were talking about! I am going to ask my younger siblings if they know what they are! Maybe they aren't big up here yet?

Obviously any information is great!  It's one thing when I saw a guy sitting next to me wearing them on the train... I figured his children wanted him to wear them.  But then there was a mother with two twin daughters, who couldn't be more than 4 or 5, waiting for the train and each one of them had them on both arms up to their elbows.  Just wondering if it's some kid thing that I'm obviously too old to understand.

  • From what I understand, they are similar to the jelly bracelets (as I date myself) of the 80's.  It was just a fashion thing.

The Today Show did a segment a while back about these and how kids are wearing them, trading them and even having them banned from school.  At an under $3 price point for a bag/bunch, it's a fashion item that's breaking the economic barriers for the younger crowd.  The segment also highlighted the aspect of kids sharing with those who didn't have any.

  • Thanks Spce!  I like the learning to share aspect you mentioned, I was just confused as I remember a huge controversy many years ago regarding them being banned and thought the trend was over.  Guess you learn something new every day.
  • Soooo....why are they being banned from schools? Causing a disturbance?

I remember when we had those snap bracelets, the kind that you would hit your wrist to put them on. Those were banned because we used them to hit each other with. lol

It seems every year something comes out and schools find a way to try and keep them out.

  • Are you talking about bracelets similar to Livestrong bracelets? If so, they were designed to promote cancer awareness. Lance Armstrong started the whole thing. But now it's become more of a fashion accessory and you see all kinds of companies producing them. image
  • So um, nevermind. I just googled Silly Bandz. Those things are ridiculously stupid. Wow.

It's because they're being used as sexual connotations.  For example, you collect as many black ones to signify the number of times you've had sex.  Pink ones for the number of bjs.  Orange ones for the number of hjs.  Green ones for the number of threesomes.  (note: all colors are made up)  Schools were banning them because of this.

  • My cousins LOVE silly bands!  They are really fun, really cheap and have no sexual connotation with them at all like the jelly sex bracelets from a few years back.

They trade them like crazy.  For instance, my cousin Caitlyn had a farm animal set and Gavin had a dinosaur set...and they traded a T-Rex for a cow.  They take them off and lay them out and trade.  And as for the adults wearing them, they probably have a kid somewhere who gave them one.  I wear one a lot around campus because one of my prof's kids gave me one.  It was so sweet, "Brittney, do you like stars?  I have a star and I want you to have it?"  How can you not wear it?  So I wear it up to campus when I think the little girl will be there.  She ALWAYS notices it on my arm, and then wants to trade it for another one. ha!

  • And as for school banning, it is NOT sexual.  They are banned from the pre-k my friend teaches at because kids are trading them all day and it is a distraction.  Really.  These little kids have nothing sexual to them because they are all different shapes and stuff.  The old circular jelly bracelets had sexual connotations, but not silly bands.  For realz.
  • I'm sorry if I sound rude but bracelets in the shapes of animals? That sounds so dumb. I wish I could come up with something stupid like that that kids would think was cool.
  • They are truly the stupidest things ever but the kids absolutely love them.  I've had to put a limit on how many Hallie can wear at one time because the majority of them end up being tight and can/will cut off circulation.  The kids are all into trading them like you would baseball cards.  Her school (as of the end in June) hadn't banned them *yet* but with a new principal coming in this year it could still happen.  I know her camp has banned them.  Bannings are happening because they are a distraction and also there are unfortunately those kids who steal them and it becomes a huge issue.
