Anyone been to Town Lake animal Shelter

We are looking for a dog. We have an application in through a rescue organization but in talking to them they mentioned a litter of puggles that are really cute but the rescue organization could only take one. The rescue organization knows we are interested in the one they picked up yesterday but I want to go take a look at the ones at the shelter. I figure that would be one less puppy in the shelter and the rescue organization could adopt out to someone else. Soo, after my long story, can I just walk into the Town Lake animal shelter to look at the dogs?

Re: Anyone been to Town Lake animal Shelter

  • yes and I would definitely encourage you to go for the one at the shelter! The one already with a rescue group has a much better chance at a new home.

hours from their website: (they are now apparently called austin animal center since 'town lake' no longer exists.)

    Monday - Friday, 11:30 am - 7 pm Saturday - Sunday, 11:30 am - 5 pm Closed City Holidays

  • I agree with pp.  All you'll have to do at the shelter is fill out a form with all of your info first, and then they'll let you look at the dogs or your choice.

  • I used to go to there all the time to play with the dogs. I never had to fill out any paperwork....only did that when we were considering adopting one. Go look and have fun!
  • My post got munched by the nest. . . trying again!

You can also do a search online for the dogs at TLAC . . . depending on how long they've been there, they post pictures online.  Maybe you can see the puggles there!  http://www.petharbor.com/search.asp?searchtype=LOST&bgcolor=ffffff&text=000000&link=339900&alink=cccc99&vlink=808000&col_hdr_bg=336633&col_hdr_fg=ffffff&SBG=ffffff&col_fg=000000&rows=10&imght=120&imgres=thumb&view=sysadm.v_austin&fontface=arial&zip=78704&miles=10&nobreedreq=1&shelterlist=%27ASTN%27

  • Thanks guys. I might go this afternoon. I had never heard of a puggle before talking to the rescue group yesterday. She described them as looking like a mini-boxer and I was sold. lol.
  • i would also recommend getting one from tlac because those dogs have a time limit!

my tip for you is to go as soon as they open or late on a rainy evening when no one else is there.  the reason i say that is that i spent a long time playing with and interacting with a couple of dogs, looking for just the right one to adopt.  well, i went in to the office to put in my application and happened to arrive at the desk at the same time as another person.  i was nice and them him go first.  he adopted the dog i had come in about.  :(  so i go back out, pick another one, come back in and that one already had applications on him.  they just hadn't put the sign up on him yet.  and there have always been a lot of people there when i've been there.

so i ended up going on a friday night when it was storming.  hardly anyone else was there.  i skipped the ready for adoption cages and went back to look at the new intakes.  found an adorable shetland sheepdog, put in an application, and 2 weeks later, they called to see if i still wanted him as no one had come to claim him.

  • A "puggle" is just a fancy name for a specific mutt :)   Pug/beagle mix.  Some people try to say it's a breed, it's not, because you don't really know what aspects of each of the breeds you'll get.

They are SUPER cute though.  Just don't call is a puggle on the pets board.  They'll flip :)

Yeah, the puggles just got in a few days ago so they might not even be on the adoption side. I hope they're not too busy if I go in before 5.
  • I adopted my kitty from TLAC (in 2005), and he's the best kitty EVER.  Good for you for considering a shelter adoption!  Yes

  • Another "yay!" for adopting from TLAC. My pup came from there in '04 and I would not have it any other way. She's the perfect dog!
  • I'm here now and I fell in love with one! We'll see what happens.

Just FYI, Town Lake Animal Center or whatever its new name is now, is becoming a No-Kill shelter (yay!)  This status was approved this year but the center has two years to renovate and expand in order to comply with the needs of the no-kill status.

Just some really good news for animals awaiting their forever homes!

I definitely recommend going with a pet from the center.

I'll believe it when I see it Huh? They were supposed to go No Kill years and year ago, I think almost 10 years ago, and it just never happened. However,I really, really hope it does!

I have 1 pug and 1 puggle. The pug came from TLAC and is amazing, the puggle came from the pug rescue group in austin and is just as amazing.

They are both great with kids and as sweet as can be!

    Good luck!

Ok. We're picking up on Sunday! DD is SUPER excited. I'll share pics. I'm kinda nervous. I didn't grow up with dogs so I'll have a lot of questions.
