I have a flat tire :(

I'm at home; the nearest Discount Tire is less than 3 miles away. I just drove from Alger Heights to Cascade/28th and home, then from home to the NE side (Leonard/Fuller) and back again without a problem. As I was driving I thought I heard the telltale "whuppuda whuppada" sound, but it didn't cause any problems.

Do you think it's safe to drive myself to the tire store? DH is OOT, MIL is working, and DH has the AAA card (and I'd rather not call a tow...). Would you drive yourself?

They can take care of it within an hour, which is good, b/c I have to get DS from daycare by 5. It's always something...

Re: I have a flat tire :(

  • Is it SUPER flat?  Is it likely that you could damage your rim?  If there is any chance that could happen, I would have it towed.  :(  You don't want to bend the rim.

Is it possible for you to take the tire off yourself with a jack/tire iron, call Discount and ask them if they'd be so kind as to come pick up the tire so they can repair it, then drop it back off to you so put on?  It sounds crazy, but they might be nice enough to do it for you.

  • I wouldn't drive it. Not only can you damage the rim but you can damage the tire too. I would give AAA a call. Towing is usually free within 5 or 10 miles. They're pretty quick about getting to you too.

But won't it have to still roll on the flat tire even if I have it towed? I'm parked in my back driveway, rear end to the street at an angle kind of.

It depends on which tire is flat and what kind of car you have. They may just bring a flat bed truck to take it there.

Boo. It's the driver's side, front.

  • Well with a regular tow truck it won't have to roll on that. The little bit of roll they will have to do to get it onto the truck shouldn't do damage. You just don't want to drive on it and get it heated up.

  • Do you have a neighbor that has an air compressor? You could fill it with air and then high tail it to the tire shop.

  • AAA will put your spare tire on so you can drive your car to have the tire repaired or replaced.  I'm assuming you have a spare tire in your car.  There's no need for them to tow the car for you.  Call them to change it for you or put enough air in it so you can drive three miles.  Problem solved.

I've had at least three tires changed, a jump start and gas brought to me by AAA over the last ten years.  They are a life saver!
