Do We Ever Have a Book Discussion?

The past 2 books were pretty slim on discussion, particularly this last book.  Are we going to keep it really informal like this or should we have some discussion about the book?  I'm no book club expert or anything, which is why I ask....just curious.

Re: Do We Ever Have a Book Discussion?

  • I could be wrong, but I think maybe our problem is that everyone is reading at a different speed so no one wants to say too much for fear of spoiling plot points...I'm not sure how to get around this? Is a month too long for each book?
  • Good point on the rates of reading.  I didn't even think about that.  I like have the guide for us to read, even if some of us may be faster or slower in getting to those finish points.  Maybe we discuss those portions since the time expectations have been outlined and those who are behind don't click on the thread for fear of spoilers??

But watch....I'd be one of those that couldn't take it and clicks anyway....

  • A month is definately too long for me.  If we had to 'meet' somewhere than monthly would work, but come on, we are online, not hosting a meeting or driving to one.  May I suggest 15 days per book?  Discuss every 5th day?  If that is still too long, we can shorten it again (10 days) or if it's not enough time, we can adjust accordingly.

    Thoughts?

I agree that this is the problem.  Maybe three weeks for each book, with a week "off" in between to get ready and find the next book?  That way, it's still a new book every month, but it seems that most of us are faster readers and finish well before a month.  I still like the discussions being on the same day of the week each time, though......just for consistency.

I would like the idea of having perhaps a few discussion questions each week, just to get the discussion ball rolling.  Nothing too profound, just maybe discussing your favorite characters so far, predictions/hopes for what will happen, etc.  If someone hasn't read yet, they can choose to click on the thread and risk spoilers or not.

    Just my thoughts.....anyone else?

I think these are great ideas.

  • Yes! I think picking up the pace is a great idea. There were a bunch of us who finished the last one in an evening.

Maybe we could each come up with a couple of questions/themes/issues we want to talk about... or a phrase or image that stuck with us? I have lots of templates for literature circles/book clubs for school purposes that could work here...

  • I like making the pace a little quicker (as long as the books keep being as good as the first two - haha)

would it be possible to post some discussion topics so that I could keep some notes for discussion?  I would really like to see more discussion of clear topics - without becoming a school assignment.  Most books have some sort of loose discussion topics on various book club websites. FOr example here is an Oprah guide to our next book  (says it might have spoilers, so click at your own discretion).

One thing I was looking forward to was a discussion b/c not only are the books good but I would also like to expand my views re: other people's world views based on the books topics etc.

  • I like where this is going!  Picking up the pace - I vote yes!  Discussion topics - I vote yes, twice!

  • I'm a pretty fast reader, so picking up the pace works for me.  Discussion topics might be hard to set in advance if it's a book that nobody has read (unless Oprah keeps doing our work for us - thanks, O!) Smile

I like the way the NBC board does their monthly discussions.  They pick a day to discuss, and anyone who's participating can start a post about a particular topic (one of the characters, an event from the story, an overall theme, etc).  All day there are different posts that discuss specific things.  It helps to organize the discussion so you don't have one post with 20 replies about different topics (if you're like me, you might reply to one thought and skip other things in the shuffle).  And we'd probably be less likely to have one post with 3 replies saying 'I liked it!"

It's fun because sometimes I'll see a post with a topic that didn't even occur to me, and it gets me thinking about the book in a whole different way.

I agree, I think both these things would help. Smile

How about we swap to the schedule that someone (can't remember who, sorry!) mentioned, with reading divided in 3 weeks and then 1 "down" week to get the new book, etc.

As far as topics, how about whoever picks the book also posts three (or however many - three is an arbitrary number) questions for discussion about the section we were scheduled to read that week? Like "What do you think of so-and-so's character" or something - they don't have to be super profound, just a starting point for further discussion.

Also, do you guys want me to keep posting weekly check-ins? Would it make more sense if I posted one (say, in the down week between books so we all know who's still on the club list, etc) and then the person who picked the current book leads the rest of the weekly discussions for that month?
