Recommend your antivirus program

I currently have been using TrendMicro for the past 3 years. My subscription is ending next month and I am thinking of using a different service.

My TrendMicro on my computer keeps telling me it's off daily. I always have to select that I want it to run and that it's an authorized program to run, etc. I feel like I am left vulnerable multiple times a week because of it not being on like it should when the computer is up and running.

What do you recommend?

Re: Recommend your antivirus program

  • I wanted to add that I googled my inquiry + thenest.com and found that AVG is recommended often. I installed it and it made my computer freeze up to the point that I couldn't do anything. I had to restore to right before I installed it.

  • I was going to suggest AVG Free but I guess not.  I've installed it on multiple computers and never had problems.  If you're fine paying, Norton and McAfee are common choices.

  • I use and haven't had problems with Avira AntiVir Personal.

Yes, I am fine paying. I've been paying annually for TrendMicro.

It seems that there is a program called BitDefender that is well rated. Anyone know anything about them?

We had these because they came free with computers and we've always removed them.  All they do is slow your computer down.

...and protect it against threats.  If you choose not to utilize on-access (i.e. continual) scanning, you will notice no change in performance.  Newer computers barely experience any slow-downs even with these sorts of functions enabled.

I'm not wildly endorsing these options, but some of us are restricted to using corporate-mandated virus software.  In the five years I've used McAfee I've been satisfied.

  • You need to uninstall Trend Micro before installing another program or you will have issues.  You can use whatever you want for AV software after that-  Avast, AVG, etc., go to www.download.com ( cnet website) and find something you can work with.  Just because you pay for it doesn't mean it's better.
  • I use AVG free and on both my computers and so does DH we've never had an issue.
  • We have AVG Free on both computers. I actually recommended it to my H when he built his new computer and he is even in the computer engineering field...lol. We have never had any problems with it.

  • I wanted to update and let y'all know that I ended up purchasing Avast and so far so good.

Thank you for all of the suggestions!
