My morning rant

I was feeding D this morning, bananas and toast.  I always give him 4 or 5 slices of banana at a time and several tiny pieces of toast at at time.  DH walks in and has a fit. Starts going on and on about how D is going to choke and blah, blah, blah.  I said, I am not standing here and handing him one piece of food at at time that is just obsurd and this is how he always eats.  DH said back to me, are you kidding, why can't you feed him a piece at a time and then had the balls to say "what else do you have to do"

I was not pleased with that comment AT ALL.

What else do I have to do??  ummm, let's see, pick up your 8,000 half empty water bottles scattered around the house, pick up the dirty underwear that never make it into the basket, wipe up crumbs from the countertops, empty the dishwasher, take care of D all day, I mean seriously???  I guess according to him I have nothing to do and should stand in front of Davis for 30 minutes every time he eats and give him a piece at a time.   It isn't like I leave the room, but I do things in and around the kitchen while he eats.  God!!!!!!!!

J has gotten to be very overprotective and it is really bugging me.  I thought I'd be the helicopter parent but it is just the opposite.  J is on top of D at all times whenever he is home.  It drives me nuts.  It isn't like I just let D do whatever but I do not follow him around all day either, I always keep my eye on him but he is a kid, he needs to play by himself without someone always hovering.

Re: My morning rant

  • How else is he going to learn to eat and play by himself?!
  • I give Jake the whole banana cut in slices all at once, he hasn't choked on them yet Stick out tongue
  • I could not imagine giving only 1 piece of food at a time.  That would make meal time last FOREVER!

at that age...I was giving Reece half of the banana!

My DH is protective, too...but more about safety stuff.  Like he was made at me when we came home from the pool yesterday and R said "bump head" because he fell and bumped his head.

It's just weird how they're protective in one way and we're protective in another.  I think that I'm more relaxed than DH is with R, when I would have thought it would be the opposite!

Exactly!!  My thing is, they are going to get hurt sometime.  Not that it is my plan for Davis to get hurt, but you just cannot be on top of them all the time, they won't learn.  Example: Davis is obsessed with climbing, he wants to climb everything, I let him within reason because honestly he is going to climb no matter what I do.  You take him down he gets right back up.  The first few times he climbed on the ottoman, he fell off head first, he cried and then he figured out he cannot do that and has since learned how to get down the proper way.  We can't protect him from every little thing because if we did he wouldn't learn how to do some things.

I think my husband would probably have a coronary if he was hear all day.   He is off the next 3 days, should be interesting, haha.

  • I think you'd have to be crazy to give him one piece of food at a time - and I consider myself to be pretty overprotective, lol.  You're right though he won't learn anything if you do it all for him and don't let him explore!
  • omg you would spend 3/4ths of your day sitting by his high chair feeding him. No fricken way. Your DH would have panic attack with me. I put a huge hand full of cheerios on C's tray and she shoves like 10 of them in her mouth at one time. I always cut up whatever she is eating and put several pieces on her tray. And I am WAY over protective when it comes to eating/choking!

  • J would have a fit watching Monk eat....no matter how small I cut things or how few I put in front of him, he just piles it all in his mouth and chews and chews until its gone....I would seriously be there forever if I just gave him one piece of food at a time....Lord have mercy. How on earth is D supposed to learn if he is hovering over every second. that is just crazy.

I feel you on that!! I think the only things I really cut up small still are pizza and hot dogs.
