Rio Salado vs. actual class...

Pros and cons of doing class online? Does anyone have a preference or what has worked better for you?

Re: Rio Salado vs. actual class...

  • Depends what kind of class it is. Bio 201 and above-not online. ENG & Reading - totally doable.

Really depends on what type of class, how much work you have to put into it, and if you are self disciplined enough to follow through. I've been doing Rio online for the last year, and they're layout is easy to use. Books are made special for them; which is good in a way, but bad because you won't get much money if you sell them back. Teachers have usually been good about getting back to me within a day or two, and they will tell you their timeline.

Agreed with Jillian depends on the type of class and YOUR schedule.

I completed my English Language Learner endorsement through them. I really loved the flexibility of when I could complete the lessons AND the price.

On the other hand, I am completing my masters degree through ASU in a satellite class and I have to say that I love collaborating with my peers and having class at the same time every week.

I would say it depends on how many classes you will end up taking through Rio. For me personally I would take a few (less than 5), but if it was more than that I'm not sure if I would like the online format as opposed to being with other people.

    GL with your decision!

  • Ditto PP.  I had to drop a few classes when I came down with mono in college, so I took atronomy online- I figured it would be a breeze since I already took almost half the class.  I ended up with a C!  It was so much harder and time consuming having to watch video and read vs. being in the lab and listening to live lectures.  I also found it way easier to blow it off and wait until the last minute.  It really depends on the class, your preferred learning style and discipline.

  • I did almost my entire Masters on line because I had a very weird work schedule (I worked in hospitality) and could not predict my schedule at work a semester at a time.  It worked well for me because of my schedule, but I would have prefered to go to class in person.  You have to be very disciplined to take on line classes because there is no one telling you that you have to be in class at a certain time.  My Masters is in Communications, so it was a lot of papers.  I can not imagine taking a science or math class on line.  If you have any specific questions let me know, I am an expert now :-)

  • I just completed my first online class (through Rio Salado) this past Friday.  It was Accounting 230.

I really liked being able to work at home.  However, I had a very difficult time communicating with my teacher and I was not nearly as driven to complete my assigned reading and HW.  As a result, I got a 'B' in the class, which is very unlike me.

You have the option of converting your class to 8-weeks instead of 16.  I choose the 8-week option, and I didn't think it was hard at all.  But I think your course load affects your capabilities (I only had one other class while taking ACC 230).

  • I took a couple online classes in college and I loved them.

If I could do my Masters all online, I would. I HATE being in a classroom and I really dread the idea of going back someday. I hate school and don't want to get my Masters but I feel it's the best thing for me.....blah!
