NFP

can someone give me the scoop on this?

i'm not on BC, although we do use prophylactics. No Spermicidal chemicals, though.

what i want is to free up some days to be sexually active without being terrified i'll get KTFU even with condoms because i dont know when i'll ovulate. i'd like to know more about it because i really really really dont want to get KU. i dont want kids.

my issue is that most info about NFP i can find is a bit heavy handed, and i'm not religious.

halp!

Re: NFP

  • This is pretty much what we do. I'm not Cath, but I like the method cuz I can't take BCs or hormone anything. I do it the track-my-ovulation/mucus way. You can also do it by tracking your body temperature. Do you have regular cycles? If so, you tend to ovulate on the same day, about 14 days before the start of your new cycle (if you have a 28-day cycle, it would be on Day 14). It takes some practice and time to get used to tracking your body, but it's not hard at all. Lemme see if I can dig up some good non-relig sites. I mostly discussed it with a couple friends of mine (both non-relig) who use the same method.
  • I'm no help, although I'm not on BC because I hated the way I felt while I was on it for like 7 years.  Anyway, Z, if you could find any info I would love to read it.  I don't like/trust the Catholic info we got.....and I don't want babies right now.  We've been doing the good old PO and have been fine for 2 years, does that mean we'll continue to be fine no.  And really, knowing your body is something every woman should be able to do, why isn't there more information on this?  Sticking everyone on the pill isn't always the answer.  Off to search....

  • This is a standard days method that one of my friends likes using:

This is just some basic information, including signs of fertility:

  • I am on the Pill, but want to go off of it. We are considering starting NFP as well.

There is a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility out there that I need to pick up and read. It may be a good start for you. I know NFP is promoted by the Catholic Church, but there are plenty of non religious people that I know who also use it. Some of the other ones I have heard of people using are FAM and the Creighton Model that use the same basic ideas as NFP.

Here is the FAM website if you want to check it out:

  • Do you have an iPhone (or I think even an Evo)?  They have an ap my friend uses to chart her cycle to help with her NFP.  I don't have an iPhone, though, so I don't know what it's called.  I think she just did OPKs for a few months to make sure she was consistent with ovulation days, then charted on the ap.  It worked for them for years, then she recently got preggo on purpose using the ap charts as her guide.  I use BC, so this is all second hand info.

  • I like this website for information:

It's not a religious site. I'll keep my eyes peeled for other good ones too. I like the info given on this one.  KMT, we've been using PO too, but I'm much more in tune now with when I'm "fertile", so I make sure we're extra careful then. But we still PO even when I'm "infertile", just in case! :-D (TMI, I know!)

  • Have you read Taking Charge of Your Fertility?  I have the A2 library copy right now, actually.  The book really does a good job of explaining ovulation, how to chart, gives examples, etc.  I would recommend that.

The book also explains how NFP is different from FAM (what Taking Charge of Your Fertility is about).  FAM is is supposed to be effective even when cycles are different... it's all based on temperature and cervical fluid.
