What's shaking, J9?

How was your weekends?

I'm trying to start off this week on a good note. After all, I got to start my day off on a high note because "Miss New Booty"was playing on the radio when I got in my car. That's a good omen, right?

Re: What's shaking, J9?

  • I saw video on youtube once of a girl that says Ms. Moogoo instead of Miss New Booty. I can't find it now to post it though. But, now I sing her version when I hear that song, lol.

My weekend was good. Pretty uneventful. I rearranged the living room, but I hate it now. And it reinforced my want for new curtains. Other than that, the ILs took me out to lunch yesterday because J got forced to work a 24 from his shift Saturday night. I'm not looking forward to this week at all. It starts my 3rd week of working 6 out of 7 days and I still have one more to go after this.

  • Hey gals- I'm trying to postpone grand jury duty... again. Fun start to my morning. Service is mandatory (unless you don't speak english, have a medical condition, or don't live in the county), half day for an entire month. Perfect. I'm so lucky. Happy Monday.

  • We went to visit FIL's side of the family.  It was the first time they had seen Amelia outside of the hospital (except for FIL).  It went better than expected but not great.  BIL won't even look at DH or I and we're pretty sure that MIL talked to another one of DH's aunts because she started in on us.  I'm completely over this.  Done.  Just want them to shut up and stay out of it.

No decision on the curtains, yet. I have a feeling DH is going to kill me when I tell him I want new curtains again. Embarrassed That will make 3 sets in there since we moved in a year and a half ago. He is a 911 dispatcher. Normally he only works 12 hour shifts, but when someone calls in sick on the following shift he has to try to fill it. If he can't get anyone to come in then he either has to work 18 hours (splitting the next shift with his partner, but then coming back in for his normal shift 6 hours later), or he can work the 24 and try to fill his shift.

  • My weekend wasn't exactly what I intended it to be... I started cleaning the house Saturday morning and had a mini-breakdown because my poor epileptic dog keeps peeing on my couch (which I hate anyway but this has been going on for about six months now and the medicine isnt working and she doesnt know she's doing it) and I can't get the smell out of the couch no matter what I've tried.  Since being pregnant, the smell makes me nauseous everytime I walk in my house - even though DH cant smell it at all.  We haven't been using the LR anyway since we got a new flatscreen back in November which we put in the spare BR-turned den.

Well by Saturday I couldn't take it anymore - I told DH the couch had to go.  We needed to convert the den into a nursery if we stay in this house eventually anyway so I wanted to move the new(er) couch out of the den, get rid of the LR furniture and go find a chair to go with the couch.

We finished cleaning, went out to just look at furniture thinking it would take us a while to find something.  Bought a floor sample chair on a crazy sale at Haverty's 2 hours later and brought it home.  We loaded up the LR furniture and took it to Goodwill and called BIL to help us move the couch out of the den.  It was stuck -- like beyond stuck.  After an hour and a half we had scratched the helll out of the walls, door jams, etc and now have to repaint the hallway/trim and the couch was still there.  DH had to go to a bachelor party so we decided to wait until Sunday and try again.

I woke up in the middle of the night thinking maybe we could go out the window with the couch - turns out it was an inch and a half wider than the door and we avoided the hallway situation where the couch was getting stuck - thank god it worked and the couch is now in the LR.  I was seriously thinking I was going to have to buy a new couch too for a while.  We did discover upon removing the window though that the frames/sills are completely rotten on the inside and basically being held together by paint.  Super.

But at least my LR looks nice and we bought a baby gate to pen the dog in the kitchen while we are gone during the day so if she has an accident its on the tile floor and not the furniture so this stuff can stay nice.  Now I just need some throw pillows and a new lamp and I think we're good.  Wow... that got really long - Sorry.

  • I wish it was interesting. The grand jury only decides if there is enough evidence to go to trial. Trial jury would have been much more fun (/easier to get out of). I'm one of the rare lucky ones who gets called for grand jury service. This summons is going to haunt me until I serve OR volunteer to serve and don't get picked from the volunteers (it is a lottery). Oh, and I have a flight to Boston at 2pm. My life is the definition of clusterfluck.

  • DH and I went home to visit my family for my mom's birthday. It was a short trip, but good. Rufus got to play with my nieces Saturday evening, and my dad's lab most of Sunday. He's done!  He was so tired by the time we got home, he was snoring in his bed!

Choo, grand jury can be fun. You get to help decide if a case even has a shot at going to trial. Lots of power!

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • Leigha- I think it could be reasonably interesting, the only problem is the time committment- 4 hours a day for a month. I haven't been in NYC for an entire month in over a year. I think I'm going to talk to someone (that is, if I'm not forced to serve today) to see if I can volunteer to serve full days for two weeks instead...

  • Oops, I misread your first post. I thought you said half a day a month (as in one day a month, for several months).  That is quite the commitment! I don't think our local one is like that. I think it's 1 or 2 days a week for 6-8 weeks. Still a lot of time, but not every single day.

If they run anything like ours, I doubt they'd honor your request. Usually several GJs sit at a time, and they probably have two different ones going on half days each, one in mornings and one in afternoons. You can't serve part time on two different ones. If only one is going on, then there won't be any thing for you to do the other half of the day. You should find out about their absence policy to see how many days you can get away with missing. Not all grand jurors are needed for a true bill.

  • Choo - There is always the possibility of a conflict of interest.  I was called for jury duty on a case related to a war protest gone crazy and was released because BIL is currently serving in Iraq and DH is a vet.

  • I had an ok weekend. DH has a friend staying with us and they worked all weekend, so I ran away to my parents' house on Saturday night. Got lots of homework done, went to dinner with them, drank wine with my mom, etc. It was nice to catch up with them.

Busy, boring week this week, but we leave for Israel on June 30! We are going for a friend's wedding and cannot wait.

  • Nothing too exciting here. Friday just stayed home. DH is working 11:30am-8pm shift this month so he doesn't get home until 9. Saturday went to lunch & the mall with my mom. Then in the evening went to MIL's to say goodbye to DH's one brother who was going back to Colorado. Sunday was church, MIL's & grocery shopping.

  • Well I was able to postpone. Phew. My mum would have had a meltdown (the baby shower is this weekend at my parents house and they are totally OCD about prep and cleaning) if I didn't make it to Boston until Friday night. Lucky- in grand jury summons, there are apparently few exemptions (disability, language barrier, and moving out of the district are the only ones mentioned) because you aren't ruling on cases, rather deciding if there is enough evidence to go to trial. So basically they do not excuse any bias or conflict of interest. Awesome. They made a breastfeeding mother of 6 week old twins serve this time because of prior non-compliance (you can only postpone so much). Can you imagine? Oy. Vey.

    Indifferent

I knew you wouldn't be ruling on the actual trial but didn't know if conflict of interest would still apply.
